Rare Waters - Fly Fishing UnLocked.

Hogan sits down with RJ Hosking of Rare Waters. Rare Waters is a new online booking company similar to Air BnB working to connect anglers with private landowners on private waters throughout the West. While "private water" holds a very different connotation in California than other places in the West, what Rare Waters is doing by providing cheap ($125-175 a day) access to world-class fisheries throughout the West for the average angler is an interesting idea. Learn more about what Rare Waters offers and the larger Private vs. Public land debate taking place in many other western states, that fortunately, most of us in California don't have to worry about. Shooting the Water: Macala Elliott on Fly Fishing Photography
Episode 178Season 601:07:49

Shooting the Water: Macala Elliott on Fly Fishing Photography

Macala is one of the most talented young photographers in fly fishing. If you look at her photos and the places she has traveled to take them you would think she is a salty veteran. She grew up on the Texas Coast with her twin brother and father who are avid fly fishermen and instead of picking up a rod at a young age she picked up a camera and has never looked back. Honestly, she has never even caught a fish on a fly rod...though she is trying. Unlike many fly fishing photographers who put down the fly rod and pick up the camera she never picked up a rod until recently but has the passion of love of the sport to convey it in ways that many of us who come from the angling perspective never would have thought of. Enjoy. [https://www.macelliottmedia.com](https://www.macelliottmedia.com) [https://www.instagram.com/macelliottmedia/](https://www.instagram.com/macelliottmedia/)

Growing up in Sonoma the natural course of action to start as a fly fishing guide would be the friendly confines of Putah Creek. For 6 months of the year and for the last 21 years Lee Spencer has devoted his life to protecting a wild run of summer steelhead. Lee will spend each day observing and taking detailed notes about his friends occupying this famous hole on Steamboat Creek known as the Dynamite hole, or what most of us now refer to as, Lee’s hole. This famous spot on the North Umpqua river drainage is a must see by all anglers that have a passion for steelhead. California’s North Coast Coho Project - Anna Halligan, TU

In this episode, Nick and Chad talk with Anna Halligan, North Coast Coho Project Director of Western Conservation under Trout Unlimited. This program started 20 years ago to support the endangered Coho Salmon and the restoration of their habitat. The guys get into the various restoration tactics used to restore critical Coho habitat and a ton more. From their website: Our North Coast Coho Project (NCCP) is a partnership of unprecedented scale and scope. Trout Unlimited, timber, gravel, and wine industry leaders, other private landowners, and state and federal agencies are working cooperatively to restore coho salmon runs in Northern California. As TU's North Coast Coho Project completes its 19th year, this groundbreaking initiative has raised and leveraged over $25 million for more than 75 habitat and fish passage improvement projects in the Eel, Navarro, Garcia, Noyo, Russian and Ten Mile rivers and in dozens of smaller stream systems. NCCP delivers both overall management and administration of such projects as well as scientific work that precedes and follows them. To date, the NCCP and our partners have improved or eliminated over 862 miles of old logging roads; removed 12 major fish migration barriers; restored fish access to more than 70 miles of streams; installed more than 2,100 large wood structures in over 120 miles of stream channels; and prevented some 534,000 cubic yards of sediment (that's 53,400 full dump trucks) from entering streams, degrading water quality and habitat conditions. Episode 126Season 301:09:16

A Tribute to Kamchatka, Russia’s Top Alpha Dog - Kuchook

Kamchatka, Russia has established a reputation for two things: being home to some of the world’s largest steelhead and having a large number of bears. Each year Kamchatka’s many bears and a few fortunate anglers cross streamside paths in a shared pursuit of the elusive steelhead. In order to protect their clients, local Kamchatka guides use dogs to keep the hungry bears at bay. Enter Kuchook - arguably the most bad-ass alpha dog in the region. No other dog was as respected and loved as Kuchook. Sadly, Kuchook was brought down by a bear recently. Guide Greg Kennedy (@fishkennedybrothers) and industry rep / photographer, John Sherman (@johngsherman) join us to celebrate Kuchook’s legacy, share some special moments on the water with him, and pay tribute to Kamchatka’s Top Alpha Dog, Kuchook. “I hope there’s bears in heaven, because nothing gave Kuchook more pleasure than biting a bear in the ass.” - Greg Kennedy --- Support the show! Episode 110Season 301:09:11

How Mokelumne Fish Hatchery Survived California’s Ten Year Drought - Jose Setka - EBMUD

Episode 104Season 301:55:10

The Underwater World of Striped Bass - Paul "Aquaman" Young

In this 100th episode of the show (WHOA!) we get down under… water with Paul Young - a real life Aquaman. Paul is a professional spear fisherman who holds all sorts of records in his sport. He’s a member of the USA team, was the recipient of the Underwater Society’s Athlete of The Year award in 2016 - the list goes on and on. Around these parts Paul is known as Aquaman. When he’s not running his business or being a dad, he spends most of his free time on the Sacramento River hunting underwater prey. Paul stalks 40LB + stripers with little more than a spear, mask, snorkel, suit and whatever air he can store in his lungs for his often 90 second + dives in the Sac’s cold and murky waters. We saved this one for our 100th episode and for good reason. Prepare to LEARN A TON and also have your mind blown in a variety of ways - we sure as hell did! Finally, we have a new intro! We are honored to have California Trout as our new sponsor. Expect more around this in a bonus episode we will be pushing out later this week. Species Spotlight - Caddis - Entomologist Joe Slusark

What if you had an entomologist with you on the way to your next fishing spot? If you listen to this episode you pretty much will! Caddis are one of the most prolific insects in our lakes, rivers, and streams. The best anglers we know always make a point to stop at the water's edge to assess a given situation, watch for bugs, turn a few rocks and check out a spider's web to see what bugs have been caught in the last few days. This episode of the Barbless Fly Fishing Podcast we offer you another installment of our new Species Spotlight series as we sit back down with Joe Slusark and explore the life stages of the legendary Caddis. Learn about the small triggers that happen during the different stages of the Caddis to crack their code and apply what you’ve learned to your own home waters. Targeting Saltwater Species - Guide Christiaan Pretorius

On this episode of The Barbless Fly Fishing Podcast we sit down with Christiaan Pretorius, to say he's an avid angler doesn't quite do it justice. At his age he has wrestled with more species on a fly rod than most folks can count. His passion for the outdoors is second to none and while his fly fishing pedigree is long and accomplished, he'd be the last one to brag about it. Fishing, hunting, photography and conservation run deep in this man's blood. We were excited to pick his brain about all of his adventures, favorite tactics, and species to chase on the fly. If you dream of chasing fish on flats, running down monster roosterfish on the beach, tramping through the jungle to find golden dorado in clear water, this is the episode for you.

How to Survive a Robot Uprising - HarvestWild - Aaron and Michelle Grabiel

Given where we are at with artificial intelligence and robotics experts estimate that we will be subjugated by machines somewhere between 2040-2050*. Once this happens we humans will need to get back to our roots - no more buying shrink wrapped meats in bulk at Costco kiddos. We will once again need to hunt and gather on our own. This is why Michelle and Aaron Grabiel created Harvest Wild**. If you find yourself smack dab in the middle of a robot uprising, grab your loved ones, food, water, guns and rods and make your way to Palo Cedro, Ca. where you will meet the leaders of the human resistance (the Grabiels). Once on the compound they will teach you everything you need to know to survive in the wild - hunting for blacktail deer, wild boar, waterfowl and turkey. If you aren’t into guns (um, it’s a robot uprising you need to reconsider your position), Aaron will show you how to catch a trout with a fly rod, gear, standing in a boat, walking and wading - you name it. If you consider yourself a pacifist (again, time for introspection here - ROBOTS!) then the Grabiels can show you how to ID and sustainability harvest all types of wild food. What kind of a survivalist would you be if you didn’t know how to prepare and cook all that game and wild food you harvested? The Grabiels have you covered there too with meal prep and cooking instructions. Is there anything these two can’t do? The Robopocolypse doesn’t sound so bad now, right? * Experts rarely agree on anything, especially this topic. ** No, no they didn’t.

Spey-o-Rama - Competing at The Highest Levels of Fly Fishing - Kate Watson

You’ve heard of Six Minute Abs, but have you heard of Six Minute Spey? In this episode of the show former guest Kate Watson calls in from BC to talk with us about her adventures at this year’s Spey-o-Rama. Kate sets the context best: “Well damn, what a hell of a week. It’s been another year of training, another winter of driving huge distances to seek open water for a weekend of practice, another year of filming, reviewing & revising casts and it all boils down to six minutes. That is all. You have six minutes to ‘prove’ yourself amongst the world’s best casters. Six minutes to stand in a pond, competing against Mother Nature and her winds or lack thereof, competing against your previous scores, competing against your friends and competitors from around the world and more so competing against the nerves that swallow your mind and push your stomach up into your throat.” - Kate W. via Instagram The idea for this episode was to try to get into Kate’s head before, during and after the event. What you will hear is funny, interesting and educational! Are you ready for Six Minute Spey? 6's the key number here. Think about it. 6-Elevens. 6 dwarves. 6, man, that's the number. 6 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea? It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Kate time, baby. Step into our office!

No small feat! Jeff tells us about the early days of the company, how they managed to scale under enormous demand, what scared him most, and how they overcame adversity. Jeff and team have built an international outdoor brand that is focused on sustainability, giving back to the community, and making a positive impact on the planet. Reintroduction of Winter Run Chinook Into The McCloud River - Jon Ambrose - NOAA / NMFS

In this episode of the show we sit down with NOAA Biologist Jon Ambrose. Jon is the National Marine Fisheries Service’s (NMFS) salmon Reintroduction Coordinator for the California Central Valley. We talk in detail about the reintroduction efforts currently underway to bring Winter Run Chinook salmon back to the McCloud River. The plan involves deployment of a thermal curtain that stretches bank-to-bank across the upper section of the McCloud arm of Lake Shasta in an effort to capture and truck migrating juvenile salmon. We express our concerns for what a thermal curtain would mean to resident lake brown trout and rainbow trout that use the McCloud each year in the fall for spawning (at the same time the reintroduction project will be happening). Be sure to download schematics for the thermal curtain as well taking a deeper dive into a presentation that we just published to our YouTube channel - a collaboration we did with Jon on behalf of NOAA/NMFS in order to represent the agency’s plan as accurately as possible. All links are below. Learn more about the project: https://www.usbr.gov/mp/bdo/shasta-dam-fish-pass.html Watch Jon's presentation: [embed]https://youtu.be/u58FQQfY150[/embed]

Thirty Years of Spey Fishing - Dec Hogan

In the very spey-cial episode of the show, we sit down with #spey legend Dec Hogan who was recently in Chico teaching a #speycasting clinic for Fish First fly shop in Chico, Ca. Dec has been there since the very beginning of fishing two-handed rods - well before purpose-built gear was a thing. He tells us about the early days of the sport - how he and his friends hacked together their own lines and rods and what he learned along the way. Dec is also into #birding - he shares some insights into fishing through the trained eyes of a bird watcher (hint: they are related!). Dec’s first book “A Passion for Steelhead” is one of THE books on Steelhead fishing history and techniques. Co-host Nick Hanna owns a copy of the book and has a very, very special connection to it due to his long hours spent with it as a teen where he practiced both two and one-handed casting methods over and over and over. Dec also discusses his new book - Steelhead Fly Tying Art & Design - a meticulously crafted book filled with step-by-step #flytying photos and instruction that he and Marty Howard (@martyohoward) recently published. Brandon Chasco is one of NOAA’s (@noaafisheries) quantitative ecologists working on interactions between fisheries and protected species up and down the Western United States. Shaun Clements holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries Science/Physiology from OSU (@odfwnfip). He oversees 10-15 projects in and around Oregon focused on delisting/down-listing of #ESA listed species, recovering sensitive species, developing monitoring techniques, addressing management questions, and developing management plans. Both men are well versed in all things related to #pinniped #predation and mitigation. These experts answer the question, are sea lions TRULY making a dent in salmon and steelhead populations? If they are, then how do we proceed? What is the timeline? Are we past the point of no return?

Stillwater Fly Fishing Secrets - Hal Janssen

Stillwater Fly Fishing Secrets - Hal Janssen

"Since the inception of fly-fishing centuries ago, Stillwater has always been viewed as the backseat of the sport. The allure, glamour, and challenges of dry fly-fishing on rivers and streams have been the primary steering wheel directing anglers’ thoughts and fly-fishing literature. With the popularity of fly-fishing today and the pressure exerted by the large number of anglers on the trout streams of the world, many fly-fishermen have turned their thoughts to the challenge of Stillwater, where quality fly-fishing still exists, uncrowded in peace and serenity.” -Stillwater, Fly-Fishing Secrets by Hal W. Janssen Learning to fly fish a lake can be like sitting down at a 10,000 piece puzzle, one lake can take two lifetimes to learn.  Listen in as the Fly-Fishing Hall of Fame inductee, Hal Janssen, breaks down his life in the fly fishing world as well as his amazing book which contains fishing secrets that every angler should know before hitting his or hers local stillwater. By the mid-1850s, in areas with sufficient surface water, hydraulic mining was the most cost-effective method to recover large amounts of gold. To facilitate this, an estimated 13,000 TONS of mercury was shipped from California's coastline to support hydro mining in the Sierras. https://www.sierrafund.org

Episode 40Season 200:55:30

The California Delta Tunnels - Michael Frost, Restore The Delta

Last week the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California voted to take on the cost of revamping the system that delivers water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta to the South, committing nearly $11 billion to building two massive tunnels. This approval pushes ahead a controversial infrastructure project that could have a devastating impact on The Delta (and our fisheries in the North). In this week’s episode we speak with Michael Frost, 1st Vice President of Restore The Delta (www.restorethedelta.org) who opposes the plan. Listen in as the guys talk with Michael about the history of The Delta and what it does for California's watersheds and fish. Find out what the Delta Tunnel project (AKA California WaterFix) is about and who will benefit, comparisons to Australia's Millennium Drought and their Desalination Pipeline Project (and what happened) and even more! Truckee California Fly Fishing - Guide Dan LeCount

Dan Lecount grew up in Leconda, CA, which is along the Pacific Coast. Dan grew up fishing and it was always a huge part of his life. Once he got interested in fly tying, Dan’s hobby turned into a passion, and he has been hooked since. Dan now lives in the Truckee/Tahoe area, and is a board member for the local Trout Unlimited chapter. He makes his living guiding, building rods and tying flies. Dan’s target fish for guiding is Steelhead, so he typically takes the winter off to avoid trips to the coast. In the off season, Dan also writes articles for fly fishing magazines, does lectures on fly fishing ethics and fine tunes his photography skills. Note: not going to focus on fishing techniques this episode. For fishing tips in the Tahoe/Truckee area, check out episodes 27, 23, 20 (part 1, part 2), 16 and 5. Hear Dan’s perspective of tight line nymphing, how he became a professional fly tyer (Umpqua), the inexpensive way you can start making your own rods and where to find some of his work. Listen up to hear why snorkeling your local waters gives you a different perspective. You won’t want to miss Dan’s explanation of the benefits of joining a Trout Unlimited chapter, and how immediate of an impact habitat restoration can have on your favorite fisheries. Protecting Spring Run Chinook Salmon in Northern California - USFWS Biologists Tricia Parker and Jim Smith

Tricia Parker grew up in the Bay area of California. After spending a lot of time in Point Reyes and summers in Alaska, she decided to pursue a career in biology. Tricia completed her undergraduate work at UC Davis and got a masters from Humboldt State University. Jim Smith has worked in the Sacramento valley since 1983, working with salmon and steelhead and on habitat restoration. He has seen the Red Bluff US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) office change over that time, growing from a small office of 3-4 people to a team of over 80 people. In his spare time, he enjoys bass fishing and running marathons. Join in as Tricia and Jim talk about the role that USFWS plays in monitoring the health of our streams. Learn about the different interests various stakeholders and local governments have in the different projects the agency oversees. Hear the different challenges that USFWS has, in particular since they are not the regulatory agency for anadromous fish, and have to rely on partnerships with NOAA. Also hear about different projects that have been accomplished, such as replacing a fish ladder from the 1940s, and projects that are in the pipeline. Much of these projects are a result of the Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) which came about due to Spring Run Chinook Salmon becoming listed on the Endangered Species Act. Jim and Tricia discuss the challenges of determining which strategies are helping salmon populations, due to the cyclical nature of their populations. Stick around for some interesting tidbits, such as where you can find salmon friendly wine, and why Pikeminnows are difficult to study. White Water Rowing Tips and Critical Environmental Insights - American Whitewater's Dave Steindorf

Dave Steindorf has been an active river advocate in California since 1997. As the primary negotiator forAmerican Whitewater, Dave has gained a reputation as a consensus builder. He has been able to gain the respect of Agencies, Non Government Organizations (NGO's), and Licensees while successfully achieving the goals of his constituents. Dave is somewhat of an anomaly, in that he has not only worked in an advocacy role but also as a consultant for several Utilities in the West. Dave is also able to draw on his vast experience in a variety of recreational pursuits including having worked professionally in the areas of Paddling, Angling, Cycling, and Outdoor Retail. In addition to this breadth of experience Dave also has a degree in Economics and a Masters in Education. Dave was introduced to rivers at age 7, when his father put a fly rod into his hands. Learning to kayak later on was a natural progression from his childhood love of rivers. One of the projects Dave primarily works on is protectingWild and Scenic Rivers. As far as Northern California is concerned, the Middlefork of the Feather River is actually one of the original 8 designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. Dave discloses the different possible criteria that a river must meet to receive this designation. Tune in for some of Dave’s fun rafting stories, from floating down the McCloud River to getting washed out while proposing to his wife. Stay tuned as he weighs in on the best kind of boat to use for a floating and fishing trip. Ever been curious about how hydropower projects get funded, and whether or not they can be detrimental to the environment? Dave weighs in with his professional opinions, which are not sugar-coated due to his lobbyist profession. Dave will let you know which types of dams are just not worth it, and which are actually hugely beneficial to the health of systems. Also hear Dave’s blunt perspective on how the EPA rollback of protections could impact the lands you love to fish. Hear about Dave’s involvement with Oroville Spillway, and his shocking report of how the facts slowly altered over time. Also hear why Dave thinks the incident was a serious case of “failure of imagination”. Find your local Water Control Board to report environmental incidents. An Introduction to NOAA - Biologist Monica Gutierrez

Monica Gutierrez is a Fisheries Biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), which is a branch of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). Her work is focused on San Joaquin River Basin. Born and raised in Woodland, CA, Monica has always been interested in helping animals. She thought she would become a vet, but decided conservation and sustainability was just as important to her as the animals themselves, so NOAA was a perfect career path. She studied fish and wildlife biology during her undergrad. Monica interned at NMFS during college, and has now worked there for about 10 years. NOAA is a part of the Department of Commerce. NOAA, while most well-known for the National Weather Service (NWS),  is actually an umbrella agency, with various branches relating to climate, the ocean, weather and coast. NMFS is a branch under NOAA. NMFS is responsible for ocean resources and habitat. Monica uses data to influence policy and make decisions, but does not often do field work. Much of the work that NMFS does helps us with endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Hear more about Monica’s background, details about the Endangered Species Act (ESA) including which fish species in California are listed, and what other NMFS offices accomplish. Also hear about some of the more notable projects Monica’s office has worked on including Fish screen projects. Monica explains the different types of screens out there, including cone and drum screens. An example- GCID project from early 2000’s. Yuba River Fly Fishing - Guide Jon Baiocchi

Jon Baiocchi has been fly fishing and tying flies since 1972. Jon is an experienced guide, author, blogger and award winning public speaker. He was born in San Jose and raised in Paradise, CA. Reminisce with Jon about his home waters back in the 70’s, which he considers the glory days of fly fishing for the area. Jon answers questions about whether Deer Creek really had better fish, and the presence/absence and general quality of fish such as brook trout and salmon. Jon gives some great advice for bloggers starting off in the fly fishing space. Listen up to hear his top 4 pieces of advice for guides wanting to create their own blog. Chad, Nick and Jon have some serious discussion about Czech style nymphing (also known as Northern California high sticking, among other names), including talking about whether this is a trend.  This discussion is partly inspired by Jon’s article recommendation, which he calls The Last Word on High Stick Nymphing on his blog. Chad also brings up the Truckee fly fishing festival presentation with Doug Oullete (episode 20), which was a demo on high sticking, which talked about the differences between different short lining techniques and the nuances of presentation. Jon later talks about the changes he has observed along the Yuba River, from under the Highway 20 bridge downstream to the UC Davis campus, upstream past sycamore ranch campground. Water has changed so much that his favorite spots are now gone. On the flipside, there are new areas to fish now. Look out for Jon’s article coming out about the “Newba” River. He will Compare the river before and after major floods, with the changes he observed during high water and everyday changes. Hear about the changes Jon suggests need to be made to preserve the river, and how the South Yuba Citizens League is the only organization paying attention to the side channels. If you haven’t yet, read the related article from Chico State - Saving the Salmon. Jon lived in Truckee in the 80’s while he dipped his toes in professional Snowboarding. He fished the Truckee river in his spare time. There were not a lot of people there yet, and he did not even fish the Little Truckee or Glennshire then. Hear Jon’s favorite time of year guiding in Truckee at the moment, depending on client needs and preferences. For further reminiscing, listen to the changes Jon has observed at Lake Davis and Frenchman’s Reservoir in Plumas County. Also hear the history of Lake Davis, including the controversy with Northern Pike. If all of the stories were not enough for you, make sure you give Jon’s Tribute to Jay Fair a read.
