Hey, everybody. Welcome to on the water episode of the Marvelous Life. And podcasts.
I'm one of your hosts and nick Can. We got Chad A in the back
in in the back in the back sitting
it yacht.
We're in the car on the way out to somewhere special.
And then we got Darren Deal, and that he's gonna be guiding us today. Darren what's happening, man.
Not much, man. We're gonna go well hard.
You know how excited I am right now. I feel like I'm going to Mexico to fish the flats. So. It's just cool it's Mexico. I have so many questions. Man. Like, I one I've never caught a car I've always wanted to, and I've got... My buddies got this private bass lake, and he's got these huge huge car on it, and I came and get close enough to,
you know, throw football. I don't because they're so spooky. So I'm gonna be really watching you to see what you're up to you. But
what... So we're where are we headed without saying where we're headed... What kind of what... Where the properties of the water we're gonna go touch it. We are headed to
one of Northern California's many
valley reservoirs with
carp.
What's cool about this one? We got a couple creek mouths come in, and it sets up, they set up in flats. So pretty much all the efficient. We're doing It's gonna be a less than two feet of water.
We are not gonna make a cast unless receive part.
So
there's couple creek mouths. There's, you know, deep reservoir boilers, there's dam but we try to focus up over on the
on the the shallow side of the lake and
you know, this particular lake got over forty miles of shoreline that we can
fill it for Carbon. So are we using h, bone arrows or we?
What what do we got? What we got?
Scott Fly pulse. Nice.
Nice. Yeah. I we left a about of home.
Do you think that all the... Because it's been a popular
sport that a lot of guys have getting into shooting car with the bone arrows. You think that's adding to the
spooky factor of these fish.
They were hundred percent. Really? Yeah. So you can definitely tell when people have in both pose. As
what'll happen is they'll think that the fly hitting the water is like an arrow,
and,
harbor,
the smartest creatures I've ever chased.
They get a really bad wrap, but they're by far the smartest creatures that I've ever chased.
So, yeah, as you get your slight land too
you know, if it slips down too much, they're gone.
And, you know, I definitely contribute.
A lot of that too the bow hunters that come out here.
And
the other half is just an being super smart critters.
Yeah. They're
they're weary bastards. I mean, that's that's been my struggle and just trying to catch hard. They're just... It's hard to get close enough to. But today, we got we got a bit of an advantage. Right? Yep. Yep. So
last year's coming here quite a bit.
In my big J, a big twenty two foot, cha off J. And I was using the trolling motor. And what I found is that they were soup speaking with a trolling motor.
And
when you were in show enough water
to where they're up in there,
if you touch a trolling motor it throws wave over it, and they're gone. You know, And one once one carb sp per brought into the other car. They're all spooked so you can pretty much write that off. So. So,
Stealth is a
huge contributors to success.
Yeah. I mean, there's times in certain
fisheries where you know, you know don't have to be stealth and, you know, you can know, gets thirty a day. But
out here, it's
as real as it gets, man it's they're permanent tough.
But what's cool about is to get
shuts today adam. So... Really it keeps interesting. Yeah. Because that that's a lot of that more than usual right in a carbon fly area scenario.
It totally totally depends on when you're at, you know,
we're lucky to have a lot of car from the valley, you know,
all the.
Here fit ones like I clear lake. War got a lot of car, but they don't really set up on the flats, like, there aren't, you know, that lake so steep. There aren't really flats with
Tal
yeah A after bay. You know, there's
You got a yeah. This river all the suits on the river. What... And the river the river carp are the hardest car in the world Yeah. Really there... Yeah. They're
what what species a carp are we... Are we going after today because there's, like, the asian car and there's they're all goldfish.
Yeah. So
out here what we have,
all the fish or popping and carb. You know, we don't have any grass carb that I know about here, I've never seen one. And they're cop... Are not the they're not the leather back car for the mirror car. They're just regular common car.
Yeah, kinda... That's kind of the most prolific car in the Us. And then how big can we expect to get?
Comments a lot of fish over twenty and thirty pounds in there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's awesome. So
full disclaimer,
the are old and smart man. They
they know what's going on. So am too, but it hasn't helped me out
with fish.
Yeah. Most the
most copper catching are five and ten pounds by say. Okay. Yeah. Definitely one of the most underrated game fish that we have in the in the country, and it's it's... I they're frowned upon because they they get in and mess up the the beds of the bass and kinda can compete with the bass and so a lot of people don't like and they think they're trash fish, but... And I've gone full circle I see one held out of the water. I used to go. You look at that ugly looking thing. Yeah. But now when you see one
posted on, you know, social media or somebody taking a picture with it. They're they're just cool fish. They're big scales that, you know, they've got the the barb whisk, you know, and they're... There's just a it's just a rip. A goldfish fish. I'm I'm I of I'd love to see Chad throttle today. I don't be again her it's guaranteed if I can tell.
What... So are we throwing like a nine lane?
I fish eight waits. A.
Salt water eight wings. Yeah. It's kinda kinda we're like... So what's it... Saltwater water eight lightweight weights Probably got a little bit more background than normally eight anyway. Is Yeah. It just just faster.
You know, wanted to get keys
fast what you mean by faster. For the new folks that are listening. Yeah. So,
rod profiles, you know, from soft, to vast is where the rod bends when you're casting and so a soft action rod gonna bend
lower and towards the cork, and
it's gonna have more of an open loop, but a fast action of saltwater raleigh getting modern, you know, saltwater,
Scott sage,
you know, Thompson Thomas rod.
They're gonna load closer to the tip, and that creates lube higher line speed, higher line speed equals longer cast.
So... And a faster cast too.
Floating lines. Floating lines. Yep.
Floating lines, shallow water.
One of one of the big things is,
you know, all of times, they'll kind of appear out of nowhere at, like, twenty feet, and
you don't have a ton of time. So
so. So get in they're quick. Yeah. I mean, it's
so... When you say they appear you do... Are you seeing their silhouette or are they tail or what's going on?
Yes.
Most... Yeah. It depends, you know, some basic tails, and days don't, you know, it's just kind of
you're out there hunt looking for them. And then when they're tailing, can you... Describe what's going on there with the fish when when you if you see a fish tail puts slightly. Causing that. Oh, they're, you know, generally in shallow water, you know, less than a foot, and they're tipping their face down in the mud, and
that kicks their tail up out of the water.
They're basically at a forty five degree. Right.
Surface the water. Get up tail for a down. Face down tail up. Face.
And
car. So it's safe to say you see a big muddy or cloudy east area in the lake. There could be some some carp turnaround around in there. Yeah. Is that a pipe feel weighted it kinda of... Yeah. Lot of times you see the mud.
The the the lake we're fishing days is kind of at a awkward level right now to where it's
right in the trees, like it, it's kinda natural height.
It's a lot easier when they're when the water's is low, so they're out of the trees or the water super high. So it's past the trees.
But you you'll see a lot more bugs in those situations. But
we'll probably see a couple groups on a mud fish today. And we'd like mud fish that means in there with
feeding on their mind, and
what's a leader look like for,
from the fly line to the flood?
I usually just take, like, a saltwater
fifteen pound, nine foot leader and I'll put
twelve pound or fifteen pound four turbo on there, most of the time.
Maybe we'll we'll put a car leader up on the rig stuff ar dot c o website for listeners centers so that they can go check it out. Absolutely, Darren. I'll sec. I'll work on that with you. Absolutely. Yeah. It's it's a pretty pretty simple,
pretty simple leader, kind of the same thing as what you'd be using for bone fish in Mexico or,
you know,
breathing permit. You know, you do we talk about what's on the end of that good. Nope we haven't what do that. So we can we get out of the water we can finish.
Yeah.
So today, we're a lot of, you know, small crustaceans and dragonfly flight nam, and,
one of the best
car flies it kinda
has been popularized. It's been
variations of the clouds are swimming them.
Sol two ties that right now and that's that's where you get those. It's a size six.
You know, it's kind of a may flight profile, but it's got a swimming tail and long hack on
the door racks
and that gives a lot action. So
the
you know, if I had to... I had to fish three car flies, I would be
at the top. Sure. So our technique today should be basic, we gotta be able to float that fly saw you know, as we're casting these fast action rods, so tendency is to power that loop into the water kind of aggressively. Yeah. So we gotta be really careful and kind of float that thing out there. All that. Yeah. If you can get a a light presentation a light landing, then you're... We call it it. If you can get a in there. This should be entertaining today while you guys are
you only me to not not crush the water with the fly.
All throw out stripe flood this is not.
Okay. You do find full my best. It's it's easy. Instead of targeting, like, the horizon or casting straight out. You just elevate a little bit. Just you just aim a little higher. Kinda like un fur completely yeah error before it. Yep. And you'll find a a half me happy medium because you'll find if you do it too high up, if you're shooting, like, up into the tips of the trees in the horizon, Yeah. That leader will kinda back
up against itself or, you know, kinda do it a couple, yep, full. But if you lower that horizon, lower that target, you'll see that leader on unfold a little bit nicer and and lay nice and soft. I almost like to, I give sometimes like, go,
shoot the cast and then follow with the rock is is playing
it's kinda like a way to to feather it if I can a little bit.
Yeah. There's a a few different ways to do that and, you know, usually when we get someone on the about boat out here the first thing to do is feel make make some clearing cast. Yeah.
You know, Bell the front. Right. Yep. Yep. But I'm see, Chalk rig and I'm learning.
I'm with Chad, I've been stuck in a house for two months, so trying to...
It's gonna happen feel like a Rookie out there, trying to cast the tight loop and let that thing land on Yeah. Dude... I've been... We've we've had push this twice for mh different reasons. So Yeah. Stoked we finally been. That's fine. So one of the reasons I'm excited about but, yeah. We're getting on this boat with casting platform, and, you know, we're... It's gonna be, like, fish the flat, It's literally like going to Mexico and searching for permits, and that's my favorite type of
fishing because in involves hunting you're you're hunting
and fishing at the same time. It's just a it's just a neat experience. Right.
Super challenging, man. It... Yeah. It's it's got a you've done rot.
If you come up here and catch cup of carp, you can go to mexico go and catch bone and fish. No problem. You know. Because. So that's safe it's a safe bet to say if you wanna practice your you're you're if you're going on a big trip permanent machine. It'd be if you a good idea to hire a guide or hire yourself to to come do a little bit of practice Not... Absolutely. That's why I start doing it. Because you know, I got the salt water bug real bad. That's right that's what I do on vacation I go somewhere tropical and go chase. It's a bigger critters. It's like going the shooting range. Right.
The exactly athletes.
I like
that's why, like, I I enjoy going after stripe because on the rare occasion that I do get to go fly, you know, salt fishing for flash. Fix.
He got all that stripe background that... Know, that's a direct. Yeah. Just transfers over directly. Know.
Yeah. Just getting more comfortable with with the sinking line screen now. Like, our the stripe vision that we do, you know, if you get stripe home you're gonna go whack them and Baja. And you're go whack you have in Dorado and
there's a lot of really cool things you can do with the skill set.
So
that's kind of my favorite thing about the carpet out here. It is
in mirrors
any sort of flat vision in tropical place.
Do you have any good
carp stories for, like, big fish, stories or just interesting battles or
to to talk about it Are you guys kinda shot a video recently.
They're all interesting, man. They're... Is that everyone is, like, a pretty
special encounter.
I they're they're tough man. They're they're super tough to catch.
They
they fight, like hell, especially when you get in shallow water and they don't have anywhere to go. Like, if you hook in shallow water and there's an edge and they can go deep. You know, it's more like bulldog on, you know, lifting out off the bottom. Mh. But if you get them in a flat where they have a hundred yards around like, they're gonna do it. And whenever they wanna be wrap around a tree right around the logs. That happens. Is a pretty common to go into your vacuum on fish.
And then shallow wick water if they can't leave a flat, they'll go in the back.
So I have yet two experience going in back in in five or four years.
Lighten up your drag.
No. Water
Don't don't do that.
You wanna you wanna try to avoid doing in the backing, you know, especially if hear you guys talk about, you know, hundreds of yards in the backing night.
That's a long ways.
You know,
your odds go down top the hundred and ten foot fly line. So
so... Yeah. Try to keep that fly line on your real.
Try to try to stop him before they get too far.
That doesn't always work out that way, but
how's
how's life been Covid itself you guys make that I know you you got under the Ac
tanner how's everybody doing? Everyone everyone's doing good, man We we took a pretty hard hit the first three... Or last week in March first three April, but...
You know, guys, started I realized, you know, they can they can drive up more a mask when I go into the stores or whatever and, get on the boat
and
have a good day efficient. Yeah. Are you finding people that's vacancy? Or they stay in the night? People start to day and night. So today is what is today, the twenty seventh. It seemed like the past week, people have been staying and running and doing a day or to trip, but prior to that, it was all day trips guys up from the sacramento bay area.
Or even local guys going fishing. Yeah. Has it caused a lot of traffic on the river because of
there at work... There's certainly some more traffic on the river.
There's a lot less guides on the river though right now. And
I hate to sound like a cock guide, but I'm kat it's catch
ninety percent of the fish out there. So it hasn't seem very
very
impacted. The that beneficiary, it's even though it's got the most drought per mile anywhere around. It's it's... It could be tough. It could be challenging for sure. Yeah.
You know, May historically used to be one of the tougher months on the sack. And we had good fish on May. We had a couple tight days, but, you know, we've had had some good fish in and there's some fish up in shallow water, you know, to feed the water so we're getting to throw the dry drop quite it. I saw that. That's good awesome. That's super fun. Just be able to do different stuff.
Staring at indicator going the other. Yeah. Yeah. Which is which is great. But how many do you need catch?
Right. Know. Right.
It's that's my theory. But it's been
it's been good, man. People are Yeah. They're definitely more conscious about, you know, the...
You know, we're not we're not hugging our guys and they show up or Yeah. Not shaking hands as much and, know,
I guess the biggest part about it is we just got. And I kinda got everyone trained to bring refill the water bottles and Covid kinda stopped that. So we're back to plastic time being. Yeah thing fizz. Right. I have to go back. You see that grocery your stores and plastic bag. Coming back yeah of no.
We just a switch back over the carbs since I got a soft track but I just wanna check On the Ac for snack.
Let's talk about your boat set like,
what
what do you Can you kinda, like, talk for about situation?
The boat we're using today.
So like I said earlier, I was coming out here in a in a jet boat with a trolling motor, and,
yeah, I'd catch a few, but they were definitely spooky from the trolling motor. So so I had this boat made in Michigan, and it's a
a flat bottom slide essentially
fiberglass
with a pulling platform. It's got a sixty horse jet,
so it'll it'll run, like, five inches of water so we can do the river cart too.
It doesn't. It pulls pretty good.
It doesn't drive very well.
It's a really versatile boat, but it doesn't do one thing very good.
You know, one think very good at all. So
the goal is here to have a, a true flats boat out here by this time this year. Trying find a use one in Florida
and getting here somehow. There's the Nick just got a new trap to probably drive that thing And do you think on
like like a rainbow set up like a flats if they make such a thing take a good good option for a leg for a flight fisher person. I think it's the best option by far. You know, all the bay boats are set up.
Set up as fishing boats more than kind of the utility. John build style that around here.
So you're gonna find a lot less snags, you know, better storage,
like,
by training
my dream boat and that'll never happen for the lakes would be, like a
twenty one foot maverick bay boat,
master handler
was like a one fifty crop so you can get through
like, we like to fish out the summer, and I think it's big on Windy days. So, and he can get pretty puck up there in a jet but the... That mastering that would kinda handle anything that Eleanor would throw out it. And the Delta guys too, You know, those guys like, you know, most of those guys are like, based out, but it's like Toby and more you have
straight Florida, Louisiana boats.
So
yeah.
More
how many boats need one more. You said, your boat got a polling platform on you talk can you describe without for people? Yeah. For for those that are unfamiliar with the saltwater game, a boeing platform a elevated platform
that the guy will
use, like, a, you know, eighteen to twenty two foot.
Carbon fiber push pull, and you pushed the boat, you know, this boat with us three and all here and day with probably draft about eight eight inches of water.
So that's not enough to scoot around and a trolling motor.
And he could do it with force, but
the elevation
being on a platform allows the the person pulling to
be able to spot fish a lot easier.
And the anger elevated
on a casting platform as well. So
being being high up, just to lets you see a lot more fish before they see you.
It doesn't always can catch them, but
which I real hard.
Have to be.
No no. So we're gonna use corn flies. That was because his hot dogs and corn. And Bread.
We got thirty seven cans of corn, and we're gonna gonna dump us a flat come back hour later. Working. I just had one on car last night work
On a scale one to ten. What do you think you are as a pole. Those was a push pull
guide.
You instead you said once the lowest,
It's really tough I apologize what point two. I've tried it a a a couple times and when I'm out in the out the ocean and when the winds blowing thirty miles an hour. I don't know how those guys keep you on track. Yeah. I mean, it's one the holders off there Okay. It's one thing but to push your boat into the wind or
across the wind. As it's blowing. I mean, it's a it's it's the...
And they're also can confined their feet or find at very small space. They can't, like, move their body. They have to, like just where they're where they're spiking into the ground. Right. I really hope you fallen.
Oh, I So I haven't fallen yet. So today might be
I'll let erode my word in the water just to see that
has to get the audio would be amazing.
Yeah.
No. Your my platform
sits up you, a little taller than most of like Florida fox boats,
because it's got a long shaft jet.
Amazing so it had to be taller and
I'm up there, man.
So unfortunately, when you do fall in here and, like, ten inches of water.
About so I kind avoided
cost stick in the mud. Yeah. So when I screaming you guys today for not sitting staying in the middle of the boat.
That's why. Okay. So that's rule number one. Yeah. So number one. Stage or I don't have a dude you don't want me on your boat today.
Three one chad makes one step to the left. Look out and you're doing.
You have any water or anything.
Or just the two guys. There might be a life jacket in there or something I don't know. Yeah. You might wanna wear that. Yeah.
Yeah So... But no we're and
saturday get out here. It's about ten days since I've been out here.
We have really warm by the day. I think our highest is one zero four or one zero five or something like that.
So that shit just I can get shower and get get higher and be biting more. So... I recall it ever getting this hot gym, but it's supposed to be make like in seventy next week. Yeah. We're getting another cold,
which
Yeah.
Consistency is good out here.
Almost in all rivers. Is that mess with the the fishing up and redding?
Yeah.
To an extent just hasn't... It just changes what we do a little bit. Yeah. More main flies is less cad. Yeah. Just different in different
different baits.
So
I'm sorry Flies.
It's good. Like, yeah
all hear if you do any conventional guiding.
I do some salmon guide in the front I do, September Salmon.
It's supposed to be a banner year this year on the sack. Yeah. What they're claiming, But they say that almost every year. That every year. Yeah. Yeah. But I think they gave us a three fish limit on the feathers, so there's gotta be something to it interesting. That was the... What was it before two to... And the year before that, it was one.
Tell what you want. Okay?
So which three salmon. That's a lot of salmon. I don't think anyone needs
three salmon per angle.
Yeah, you got four guys and you got
kill twelve salmon seems the excessive to me.
What can you do? Well, we're pulling into the boat launch. Let's
cut off and just be back up guys on the water.
Well, I I'm pretty sure that
phoenix next
podcast
because
carpet yet. I to do. Passing at each other.
We're just discussing a chat. R, you said this was gonna be easy dude. What's going on? Yeah. No. It's
That's super easy.
That's super easy All you have to go put it in one's mouth. No. It's... It's a lot of fun. We're just teasing. We we haven't had anything come tight, but
we've we had a few shots.
And A lot of stuff. Yeah. They're super... These fish are super spooky. We wanted to kinda wait a little bit to record so we kinda could get into it get into the zone, and it's like,
it's a super quiet game. Like, their their lateral lines, which is that that Next one at three o'clock kind of sensory
area on the left and the right
of their you know, their flanks is where they... They're kind of, like almost a reverse sonar,
and
these guys are very they're very, very sensitive. I kinda wanna do a
spotlight on carb just so we can kinda understand the the physiology a little bit better, but
they're very spooky, like, even if you put down a can,
on the deck too hard, they'll they'll bounce if they're in the vicinity.
If you
you know, you blow your cast over the top of them, they'll balance. So it's, you know, you gotta...
Yeah. Like, dinner, like, Darren, what do you say the dinner play thing? Can you describe that.
Yeah. So
these fish pretty much, they're not gonna eat unless it's within a dinner plate in front of their face.
They don't chase it down. They don't track it. I mean, they they will get aggressive in certain waters, but he's northern California waters where they're... They are pressured a lot by the bow shooters.
You gotta get in the pie plate, and you gotta sneak up to them.
And when you say dinner plate, it's not, like an outback steak steakhouse dinner plate, it's more like a high end french restaurant dinner plate.
I've never been one of those.
Yeah. Well, you don't... You're not missing anything.
I'm sure the cocktails are fine.
But, no. We're we're out here searching for carp.
Got on a pretty good water them early.
The issue we had that they were mu
pretty intensively.
So the entire area was muddy. And so we weren't able to see when that fish air fly, and these fish are really difficult to to get unless you can see them eat the fly.
It is really pretty out here, but it's it's weird. Cool. I was just gonna say we're kind of in, like, a flooded
tree line that looks like it would be fantastic stuff hunting
at the right time. Board.
And Right. Well right now, it's pretty shallow and every once in a while, you'll look out and you'll see that the punch and mud thick mud, and that's an evening area that we've
spooked to cart. I never have been to the ever lights, but I imagine it would be like this.
Yeah.
Yeah. Pretty marsh. Pretty similar. Marsh, You know? We're in... We're literally in maybe a foot of water right now and Darren on the on the
the polling platform, just pushing us around.
And he spots the fish first because he's up higher and then he tells us if, you know, if the boats at twelve o'clock, he'll tell us if they're at, like, three or two... Or, you know, eleven, and then we just...
Usually, we have to site it and then lock in and entering cast on the first cast. Right, Darren? Because what... What did you... What were you saying about the next... The second and third cast. Like, your first shot is by far your best chance of getting the fish before he sp.
And every shot after that, you... Chances to just keep diminishing.
So we really try to
lay it in there
beautifully on our first cast.
And when when when it gets done, right you can them. And that's not saying if you get a couple shots on.
Okay. Nick got one. Sky. Well let's just kinda see what he's doing. Me turn the boat.
So he's we spotted one off the. I don't know what the right side of it is in Boats because a port side or... Starboard.
Starboard side.
Remember port.
E o team and left is L e e.
I spent a week at a Captain's license course to to learn that, and that's all I remember from the course.
That sounds like me math in college.
E
anyway, yeah. So we we sigh We we pull... He we pull around, and then you side it and you kinda, like,
get your... Get everything the line set up for that that first cast, and that's it. You know, usually, they either sp or they're not gonna eat.
And then you go the next one and we just, like, Darren saying earlier, we we got into a pot of them.
But we're trying to just get one one fish the boat first before we started recording.
So that we could, you know, get that out of the way and and talk about that, but, you know, it's getting kinda a little bit later, so we'd started recording.
Great shot.
I thought he was on it man.
That fish turned aggressively towards the fly and kept swimming.
We haven't caught anything, but what's fun about being out here is just getting dialing in your your accuracy. Yeah. Yeah.
It's like trying to throw ping pong ball into one of those fish bowls at the at the
circus or the carnival. Yeah. My dad runs that game.
It's funny.
I'm gonna step up on the deck. Okay? K. And I told I told Darren I was stepping up because he's he's about six feet off the off the actual deck and if I throw him overboard in a foot of mud. I I don't wanna be the guy to dig him out because he's pretty heavy.
You know what this this reminds we were in a a bay on and belize fish and permit, and
it couldn't... It was kind bracket. You couldn't really see that well, but what could see is a d away.
Coming at you, and that's what you were targeting. These giant permits.
Come a
super fun.
With a water
really challenging. Yeah.
And looks like cool. Like, there's so many different characters of water. You have mud and
This looks like ever bra water now. Looks like a lot of fish are in this area because it's
a clear... Kind of a clear water to now it's a water area. Yeah. And we're recording at the, during this little heat wave we're having in in June twenty twenty.
Where it's supposed to get up to a hundred and, like, what did what did they say, hundred and four one one four today.
It's actually. It is may. You're right. Yeah. So it's making me twenty fifth.
Yeah. Yeah.
So
But it it it's not bad out here on the water. Not too bad. We're having a, thirty grace swing next week is supposed to be seventy. So it's been pretty nutty.
There's some
one at three o'clock moving left.
Moving right to left.
I don't see...
Feet out. Start pointing your rod. Yep. I see it.
Good.
Oh, right there. He's on.
Strip.
Damn. He... I I saw him kind of...
Oh, dude. He's right there. Damn, man.
He still hasn't spooked yet. He's on his third cast.
Just like
come on. You gotta eat the ab bro. You gotta find an meter. K. You got another one up there at too. Gotta find.
So the kind of the the edge of the screen. Yeah. Each inch. Right there. Right on the edge.
Of the clearing inside. There's there's yeah. There's there's a just lunch stall out here for a second. Just be real gentle and it looks like we found the
there's a bunch of The pod.
I think that little step I made did it.
Well,
I can't say that it did.
But I doubt it helped.
You really have your diplomacy down on the boat. You, I noticed you're very skill skill foot at tone somebody they messed up.
He hasn't fallen up the up or. I know. Ski early.
Yeah. If you looked at his toes, it kinda look like a goats feet.
Whoa. That was a big one.
Look at the wake on that thing, Jesus.
It's got shark.
Wanda does showed cert his tail. Have you guys seen a goat foot up close?
I know that's kinda. I have not
speaking of goats feet.
Well, this this pond fish. Right? It's a water ski lake, and they have they have goats, pet goats on one of the on on the island on each turnout.
They're... It's like, there's... There's willow trees and then a bunch of weeds and stuff. So they put these two goats on the island. So like I we call it Goat island. There's two islands so they're both Goat island. So I've had... And the the the goats are trained to get the boat when you go up near near the island because they're gonna... They know that they're gonna go to the neck. The other island to get new food.
But when they're ready to go, like that Willow tree is you could put a freaking bubble line level up on that that tree. It's just perfectly chopped down, you know, underneath.
I don't know where I'm going with. The feet. So you get close enough, and you can see that their feet are trippy.
They've got... Basically, it looks like a
Yeah. It looks like a horse hoo, but it's soft, and it's got a split, like, a ninja boot. It looks like an ninja boot, basically, but instead of just your big toe. You have you know,
I don't know if goats are considered toes, but I'm gonna call this scoot the go toe episode?
For,
question,
am I supposed to know what a ninja boot is?
Oh, yeah. That... Sorry. That's an Eighties reference.
Back in the eighties, there were there was a a lot of good
good film put out as you guys probably have heard.
Jim Kat, being one of the top ones in my my all time favorite.
And then all that entered the ninja were really good. The guys in their in their forties and early fifties know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, a ninja boot. Thanks for asking Darren,
is it looks like a
like a boot you would wear, like a neoprene boot? Yeah. You'd wear, like, I don't know. To send make one.
They... You know, they might... Honestly, they might have a ninja boot inspired
what it flats boot possibly.
But it's basically a boot with with one,
like, picture picture and the neoprene boot with a cut for one or two your toes to fit into on the far left.
But you're you're in step. I mean, you know what I'm saying?
Yeah. They look really cool. I guess, is a point.
Now they have those boots at... All all your toes going to people swear about it. Those feeding
vi, whatever. I do not
I do not like them.
Brian Bo is a big... A big...
He he
peddle him on,
on Instagram.
He's a big... I think the... Obviously, they're sponsoring him. You guys know who Byron Brian Bo is? Negative.
Holy shit.
For those listening
in our Oklahoma sooner fans?
Okay. So Brian, okay. Do you know who Bo Jackson is?
Yeah. Bo jackson
pretty much bought... So Brian Bo like for, like, a whole oklahoma sooner, and the, I I believe, like, the late nineties,
and he was just a freak of nature, like, a freak.
And he he got drafted to do the Sea,
and by the time he got to the Sea h his shoulders were we're pretty shot.
And he didn't last very long in the Nfl just because his body was already pretty pretty beat up,
but he was a... You know, he still is kind of a celebrity. He's done a lot of cool b movies and,
are we talking carp eighties movies? The name of my our first lab boss accused at that?
Who named him? My brother? Well, that's why.
I guarantee it.
You're... How old's your brother? You're age. Yeah.
He knows?
Hey, Nick. Yeah.
Nine o'clock. He got two bertha.
Get in there right now.
Oh,
let's just leave it. Oh, boy, it's looking at it?
It's looking at it.
These guys haven't seen a
pork either,
which is a classic,
and I was gonna make an analogy
that these carp when you throw flying, they'll come towards it, like, Be ball brick when when they... The the shower scene where the guy, you know, it's scene I'm talking about. She's like, here, she comes.
And then they they're... And then she grabs it, and they're, like, she's got it. And they all run. It's kind to like that.
That's kind of carp fishing in my mind, but the car
in the fly is your yeah.
Yeah. I've been putting the intern on on a movie list.
So he'll get my jokes.
He's... He actually likes the movies. I sent him. So
Sometimes tough to go back and watch those little movie.
Did... What what what about them other than them being too awesome to watch is wrong.
This the time this time.
Oh,
About.
It's naked outdated? They... The eighties, like, broke whole new genres as a film
and did it in the most epic way possible. Movies like they used it. They don't because... Stop doing so much drugs? No. It's all about Hollywood
inability to to take any risk anymore.
They had to do it back then because they didn't have that good marketing, so they were kinda throwing a white net,
and now all your shit's the same because they're just trying to mitigate risk.
Space.
For the listeners that are Amazon Prime members.
She go to Amazon Prime
and type in Carp.
Really a really cool story about the history of the Us Car.
Like, the common call
on carpet talks about fly fishing farm. I can't remember where they did it. Where to get us back on track there.
Well, I know they did a
I think they had... They had, like, a Columbia river guy. They do a lot of carp fishing up there, and they fish... Water clams are actually pretty cool.
And then they did a segment.
There's a... There's a there's something running around right there.
See you.
Mh.
That's a right. Things kinda remind me of pigs.
They run around in the mud.
Or my animal when I feed him.
He got some nacho last night
Oh, man. It's bad. Did Go.
Well, I forgot I I put a little, like, chopped up jalapeno in there because I just... I I don't like super spicy, but those... The pickled jalapeno are pretty good,
and I think you got a couple of those and I paid dearly.
He hasn't been in studio for a while.
Oh pig.
We did move our
off of the studio again to back to where it all started four years ago.
Nick. Where is that? You made that announcement already that? Well, and not everybody listens to every single up, so though
bio.
Back to fish bio? Back to fish bio.
Yep. Yep.
Wanna thank them.
Nick. Go ahead. We're giving us long ship and... Move. Yeah. We're me a little move.
Let in there out. Just tough here. It's just little little cloudy. Little cloudy of these are really scared now.
That boat came through and I think messed. Yeah. Things up a little bit.
So we'll try to get out of here.
We're a real weed cove right now.
And we have an outboard jet.
And those things don't mix.
Are we like jet to a different spot or are we go... We're gonna
eventually here in a second.
We're gonna what?
What's that? What'd you say? We're gonna idle out. Okay.
What are you calling? What?
Except they're not very good. They're not good ducks to call. They kinda do their own thing.
They're fly... They like to fly by.
Drive by.
Alright. I switched spots with Nick. Alright positions.
That's thing. Cool, again, You miss, you know, you sp five, you're down.
Kinda like that The bars back of the day.
Back one to go to bars?
Yeah. Remember that. You guys do remember that. Right? Back in early twenty
dick for eighties movies, though.
This is out of bars.
Have you guys seen any eighties movies? Like,
I'll give you a layout like, breakfast club?
I've seen breakfast club. Alright. Nick, have you seen breakfast club Of course. Great movie. Classic. K.
So I... If my... Body shack? If my bucket like rot Rodney Danger field and Molly Ring you guys will get it. It's
Just stay on those two folk... Those two topics.
Is he still alive?
Rodney Danger?
He's cast. Yeah. He's
he's done. He's awesome.
Kathy shaq amazing. Yeah.
I think that Chevy chase and Cad shock was probably his best film.
No no
You do drugs, Danny?
Yeah Yeah. It was so sick.
Think guy was so great. I wanted to be that guy so bad when I was a little kid watching Chevy do a thing. Just such a stud.
You see anything they're in?
No. Not see anything, but about a hundred yard yards here, we got a really... Really nice flat. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. But deep and it should be clear. Cool.
So if they're up on that.
Kinda just wanna cast the structure and see if a bass eats.
Yeah.
Do you bring that swim bait mold show me? No. Perfect I haven't got into that. I haven't started pouring yet because I haven't had any room, but now that we've... The office back down at fish bio. We can...
I'm gonna try try it.
Apparently, you have to, like, have a pretty good vent... Set up on ventilation and whatnot because
pretty toxic. Like, a bit flap
I think it's probably close to cooking meth.
There's the Os. I've been wondering where the os are at. Yeah.
There's there's actually quite a few paul the mules out here. Is there? Yeah.
Got. Is that one right there? Or no?
No. We were shot and not on the sack the other day and saw a golden eagle
invert to protect itself from a
operate. It was coming down with its wings locked to attack it.
Unlike the V. The Golden Eagle just flipped upside down and threw his talents out. I the sit there. It was one the... It's so cool to watch those things, move like that.
I don't... Hi as a kid. I don't remember tower. They're being because
avert. Yes exactly. Call back to eighty days.
What'd you guys say?
Because I was inverted.
What's that from?
Did come on, really,
that's... I'm not even gonna justify that with an answer.
A lot of dams out. That movie it should the the next one is supposed to come out, like, I believe it was supposed to be... Before this month. Right. June. It's June second June. You're
knows now.
Is it still on for him. I sent, like, three weeks into the quarantine I sent you a message saying they should just release it early and charge people thirty bucks and... Yeah.
It'd probably make more money on it.
Dude
that that trailer gave me the longest sustained direction I've had in probably five years.
I got. He's talking about the ten minute trailer, guys that Don't judge me. Not the not the sore one.
It's gonna be awesome. No.
Did you guys break down the listeners yet? Any reviews at Tiger King?
No. No. I I refuse to watch that stuff. I know. Sorry to hear. I'm like, how are people watching this crap. Dude...
It's just if you gotta be in a other, you know, if you're smoking or drinking, it's
one thing.
It was entertaining.
You give it the...
Entertaining is a good word for it.
Or maybe interesting. Yeah. Interesting.
Carol Ba definitely killed that guy. You sheep that boost or tag your son. Yeah.
I don't know what you guys are talking about.
Okay. Now I kinda feel... Now I know how you guys feel wanna talk about eighties movies.
Hamlet lil.
Netflix.
Alright.
Be scanning it everywhere, Chad.
I I am. We're gonna start showing up. I'm just whipping the water trying to sp anything. Yeah.
That helps. Hey, Nick, can you check the levels on and make sure we're, like, fully recording here? Oh, that was a toad. Look at that guy?
Yeah. Took off.
Okay. I gotta get serious here.
Grab some of this stuff.
Yeah. It looks good. K.
Yeah. The dams
dams should be coming off on all the lakes around us. So... Yeah. Good job fishing to be had on it that Dams will hatch Davis.
Yeah. A.
It's a shame the quarantine is not starting now for everybody guys. Yeah, the next, like,
three weeks. We got, like, so much cool stuff going? Is that?
What is that chat? But that's a bath right there? Or is that a car? I don't see any can't tell. It's kinda murky
or is that? That's weeds right there.
I don't. Right it. I think it's stick, but dry it. It doesn't hurt to check. It looks sticky.
Yeah.
Yeah. Efficient dams will flies on a floating line and long eater and some shallow for travis is just like bone... You know, a lot like bone and or Yeah. Even this out here. Yeah the heck scratches is about to start.
Pretty hatch. Just gonna go off. Right around the corner. Hope you got some dragonflies playa going here soon.
You guys haven't done the hex hatch man.
A.
Yeah.
I'm our cool. I'm... A lot to do it yourself access there too. Yep. Fall River. I think the fishing on far River is better for the hex hatch,
But it's kinda hard to get around there. Hundred times more scenic, but, yeah, access is is tough unless you go through, like, Yeah. Clearwater lodge or some of the guides that have access. Yeah. Into boats there that can and get on. I mean, there's... I think there's one public spot, but
you're gonna go make the the trip up there, get a guide. It's... Mh. You, you know, just because you get boat access does not necessarily
mean you're gonna catch fish on that that river you need to really know what you're doing.
It's pretty cool to see though, the, like, you go from lake to to fall river, you know, that lake fishing with the hex. You those fish are
moving along and eating bugs as they go or the river those bugs are coming to the fish like a conveyor belt.
And they're a lot more concentrated.
Twelve o'clock Jack. Oh, right here. Yep. So just guys start talking... Yeah He just pushed out.
He was right there.
Well, this thing's a super sync.
Yeah. And fly just less visible than the last...
Yeah. The last one there.
The nicole just tried to facetime. I hope she's not going into labor.
Oh, boy.
What?
I would never hear the end of it now.
No. She would play that that particular segment
on your anniversary, and then your kid birthday
every week every year.
Yeah. Have to name your boy common carb.
Or we take another lap either? Why'd you spin us thin like it?
No. So this this flat here, like,
all of the the listeners can't see it, but
It runs at like a forty five. So I'm just gonna kinda stay on the deep edge and this flat goes out like,
two, three hundred feet. Oh, I see.
So it's if you picture a pyramid in your in your eye, in your mind's eye, and we're on one of the banks of pyramid. We're just gonna kinda go out towards the
middle of the lake now. Because this huge flat. It's like,
six to
two feet feet pretty much.
It's on this lake. You guys better get your cart game on because,
Salmon and steel head are gonna disappear from the face of the earth.
All you're gonna be able to do is fish for carp. Yeah. Bass.
They're just gonna move north.
John Mc.
Yeah. That's right. They're gonna move North Way north.
Yeah. That the only habitat that they have.
It's gonna be water world.
You guys know that movie.
I like that. They got terrible reviews on Rotten tomatoes. I think it's awesome. It was the biggest piece of shit film ever, but
It they doing a lot of money on great because it's the biggest piece of shit film ever.
They had a lot of money disclosure. They they totally... It's basic.
It's Mad max
on the waters. Yep. With gills
behind the ears. Which happened on Memorial Day on the Sacramento river and redding.
Soccer like water roll they're, like, thirty Jet ski. Yeah. Some of the some of the
the people that that inhabit the the sides of the lower sack
look like the extras on water world? Yeah.
Then... Was there a death up there?
There's been three deaths on there ever this year already? What's with that? How come that with just people being
Careless. They didn't realize the water was that cold and Yeah. Like, what... The last guy was a horrible story.
His buddy broke down on a jet ski on the other side of the river, and his buddy told him swim over.
And he got about. Two thirds of across. City hypo hypothermia out. Yeah. And then
and one of the guides Steve Fry was, like, fifty feet away from when it happened when he went Fry was? Mh. Oh, jeez. Yeah.
Pretty pretty horrible.
Yeah. It's bad.
We didn't not... He was jet skiing out there. Didn't have a life vest.
No. So the guy that swam across was going to help the guy on the Jet. Oh, Gotcha. So he was just, like, drove up to the bank. And was right below Anderson River park. Holy cross. Gotcha.
Yeah. Gotta to respect that that river big time any water. Don't. You don't have much time in fifty one degree water.
Yeah. It's a amazing... Your body just locks up. Mh. That's the thing. I I think that people that don't know reading and don't know that water. They'll come up there.
They're like, oh, it's a hundred and five out. I'm just gonna get in the river and cool off. And then... Thanks breath out of, man.
It's it's
you're doing a hundred degree swing or a fifty degree swing like that. Yeah.
Dude it's Murky, There's gotta be fish in here, but I'm not seeing anything.
No. I'm not seeing either. You'd be able to see the... You'd be able to see the smoke. You got one right there off your rod tip. He's facing right? Yep. Yep.
And he's down... He's definitely eating. Right? Yep.
Okay, Dude.
Come on.
This flies is perfect for in here though it just like gets down. Mh.
Look at those little fry. They're white.
The shed.
Are they're shed in here? Do you know?
There's all sorts of little little bait fish in here. Yeah.
So is that... What they're gonna look like in this water is just kinda like, like a milky. Yeah. The deeper... Yeah. Like, so that particular fish there? I I think, you know, part of
I'm... I've talked to you guys a fish salt with with guides before that are guides and they're, like,
the guy... The the guide I'll see a fish, like, a minute and a half before I do, and it's just because your eyes just trained
for pattern recognition if you look enough and
That was definitely an example. That they're wearing coasters, mee seeing. Yeah. I have hostess.
I didn't see it. No, It's just
practice, you know? You gotta practice... You got you gotta know what you're looking for in the first place, you know?
They don't...
Sometimes they show up really good, but, like, right in this particular stretch right here. They're not gonna show. Great.
So we're gonna idle across this deep far. It's a little too deep for me to pull. K.
Do you want me to get a office?
No. You just take a seat on the cooler there for a segment own Time for a swim.
Yeah.
It's not a terrible idea.
So we moved spots.
Clicking... Move spots on blue one out already? Did it. Yep. Well, oh, that was... Do you see that Blue Just jump?
Yeah. It... Was that a blue Gel? Yeah. For sure. Maybe a copy too this leaks? Oh, there's copy in here. Allegedly full of copy.
K.
I'm just getting the line out, and
get that line out, make a clearing cast.
So, Darren, if somebody decides to get in their boat and go target carp.
What would you
what would you recommend them doing such bottle?
Oh, where do we even start? As far as your seat. So they know where the car are and they're going to target them? What would you recommend they do as far as like presenting a fly or casting light fish that's either down note. Let's start with nose down and it's in the mud.
First things first, like, you gotta sneak up on them. Like,
they don't really
react well with trolling motors.
You can if you can kinda drift into them.
Like, that's the advantage using, you know, push bowl. You can use a drift boat, you know, have one guy stand on ice chest or something.
There's other ways to do it, but
I like the cast.
I like... I'd rather
fish them,
like, a straight head on shot where they're looking at us. Like, I don't really like that.
What, I think you'd be looking or what's better off to fish him at an angle. Mh. So cut them off and let the fly land. Three feet in front of them three feet pass them and strip it into the lane. Right? And there's that little magical window
six inches in front of them,
and right below his nose,
and a lot of times if you can
get that formula correct.
They'll have yourself carp.
Because I've seen we've seen a couple different carp as far as their behavior. Some are in the mud and they're tailing and moving the mud around and then some are suspended and cruising across the surface. And Yep. So those mud ones we've been targeting basically on their nose. Right? Yeah because they're they're looking down.
Same thing with like a permit, you can get a little bit more aggressive, potentially on on a fish like that. Yeah. The Where they're cruising, you wanna lead them a little bit more
The the the floaters are hard to catch, man, if they're if they're if they're up, there's certain flies like that
sol tube
swimming n,
if I could have one fly to fish floaters with... It would easily be that fly.
If
you can see it pretty well and it it doesn't sink too fast and so you can stay in their water column.
It's been a lot of fun. Yeah. Thank you for getting this out here and and doing this... Yeah. It's definitely way different than anything I've ever done, so that's... I really appreciate that aspect of it for sure. Yeah. Absolutely. It's fun to do different differentiate. We got a lot of different options in California.
Yep. You, a lot of times you get... Yeah zoned in too much on certain things and
we're driving past a lot of fish to gets new ones.
Me check this little cove right here.
Nick, when we get through this cove, I wanna switch with you, give you. Okay. Last fifteen. Okay?
So the one thing I won't look at the frog water, slack water and he... A lot look at it a lot different now. Alright.
Yeah. I mean, all the river blues have them. Yeah. The river are, a little bit more finicky. Yeah. They're about as tough as they get because they get shot the most with with bows.
They see the most amount of pressure.
A catfish there.
Kinda looks like a perch.
You wanna switch.
I think that's a juvenile cart.
Yeah. Yeah. You're right. I think it is. Here.
Well,
I highly recommend booking you to come out come out here and do this. How do people how do people find you, Darren?
Easiest ways to probably just
ac c five fishing dot com.
Call the office get in touch with me.
Can also
slide in my Dms on the Instagram.
And
off cha. Send nude.
That's I was just saying as was, what's his office look like?
What's that? I was wondering what your office looks like?
Oh, I don't I... I'm not a I'm not a office guy. There's someone there taking care of it
I'm not log near it.
There should be some. It's sitting right in here. On this ridge.
Looks busy.
Come on, show up.
You find that the fish like to to eat during certain times of the day. Feel like afternoons is usually the best. Yeah. Yeah. I was surprised when you said, yeah. Like, we could do eleven to four. Because that's like the time and I don't like to go. Yeah. The carbs different.
Well, the the biggest thing here is seeing them, man. Right. Okay you we want high sun.
Yeah. And that's why we really only fish him, you know, middle March too.
Because you know, maybe middle of September? And it's cool to know though because, like, if you're gonna go bass fishing and you're gonna be out there all day long. It might be good to, like, bass fish first thing in the morning,
car up until... You know, whenever and then start bass fishing get at for.
Absolutely. You know.
That's cool.
What is the record state record carp? Any idea?
I just heard this figure one coke. I remember what it was, but I know that
there's been bigger fish in the state record is because no one
thinks about it. No one... Yeah. No one, you know, if you catch a fifty pound car,
you're not gonna...
Right. Call fishing game and try to get your name in the books however, that works. I have a new gold life though. I think try to catch a state record. We gotta do a species spotlight on these guys because I wanna know exactly what they eat. Mh. How they got here.
What what variety there are.
So two why they get so big.
Right. You know, because that's a thing, like, they're they're huge
compared to all the other fish in here. The class the size class fish. Little one just dart. Yep. There is a ton of bait fish in this place, though, that's one hundred percent.
Too really ways learn about carp is that carp land movie I was talking about on Amazon Prime? Yeah. It's a r a bd film.
It's like twenty minutes.
Super cool. And then
the bible of carp fishing was
written.
I believe in ninety seven.
And that's
fly fishing for carp, John Barry men
and
Brad beef is. Hogan just told me about that book. I just read it.
That's good. Yeah. I was killer. It it just explains a difference between the... We'll put orders and,
you know... I'll try to remember to put a link to it in the show notes for this up. Yeah. I got it on Amazon.
And then, you know,
picking dudes brains too.
Hogan Brown just do quite a bit of car out here.
He's kind of a critter when it comes to that,
and then
John Sherman,
the
Shi fishing wrap. Yeah. He's been hammering the car. He just got his son on his first car. Yeah. Yeah. That was so dope delta. You see the the the last
did video he put up with his kid doing a doing a,
snap he. Yeah. So sick. Yeah.
Global dudes gonna be a g. Well, he already is. He's get better. It's kids they're Anglers english man. Yep. Sure,
they got a good teacher Sure.
One of the best anglers I've ever met by far. I fished with
Darren would the other day. Yeah.
And we started talking about that that video that that Sherman put up with this kid at the golf course. Yeah. And that golf course, him and Darren used to sneak on when they were kids and fish, How cool is
because him and Darren grew up together. Yeah. I they went to college together.
That doesn't. But that's just so neat to be able to, like,
you know, you're, like, getting chased by the security guards when you're a little kid, then you take your son there.
Twenty years later, where... How, you know, have her long. Yeah. Sick.
That's a I know there's a lot of peacock bass like they plant and like some of the ponds in Florida.
Gotta it'd be awesome to have, you know, just some killer fisheries in art. Right local waters. Yeah.
Ce is a good one.
Oh,
luck lake out there. Yeah. Brad Hen club. Yeah.
It's good fishing out there. Yep.
You to put stripe in it. Yep.
That was fun.
I heard that the bass ate them
Hate the stretch. I didn't do too a well for some reason.
It's gotta be some longer bass in there.
Yeah. The glare is getting a little tougher. With that sun dropping down. Some glare. Let's
let's wind that up, nick. Let's go. We gotta get out of here in about fifteen minutes.
Let's yeah. One more honey hold to check out. Yeah. Let's just go back to that mud.
That we had earlier. K. See if they're in a little better mood.
Cool.
Well, we'll be right back We're gonna move to different spot here. One beer idle.
Ro
in the wagon.
Pushing too many pencils.
We're back.
It's one thing I having a little two year old at the house running around and get all these freaking kid songs and crap in your head.
Knuckle it in the wagon. Is Derek gonna on Ppe off the back of the boat I hear P.
Now. That's the. The scariest thing is that you'll be sitting there.
Quiet the coil will go off. That's happened here Like, what? The
like full sentence talking to.
We we're back in
back
first spot we tried.
Yeah.
Walk
a little bit. Actually, it's kind of mix. It's mixed back up a little bit. It looks more clear.
At at least fifty to seventy five shots at these fish.
Yeah. A lot.
Trade it.
Today because
You're not?
No.
Awkward.
Messing with you guys.
Messing you guys. That might be a tip now. Take.
Not a tail.
I got one behind me here, Nick.
So you move in the left. Yep.
Strip that strip strip strip strip strip strip strip let a ball.
In biggest.
Slow down.
Communication with the guide is key. I'm listening to what they say.
I'm gonna jump up on the top here, darren. Top up we
think real light on your feet there. Chad.
Well, I mean, I'll thank it. But...
Yeah. No guarantees. Yep. Fish shallow over here.
We're gonna focus on the shallow side market. The full chop health. Yeah. It doesn't hurt.
Makes it harder to see, but it also makes it... Harder to see for them.
You know what? I kinda like this little breeze.
Yeah. That
it was dead calm earlier. It felt like ten.
Backside of a french nuts.
Kinda slide that in there because it's was a little clean two episode it's a little too clean of an episode.
For my my standard.
Is that one tail up? Yeah. We got a lot taylor in here. There's a lot of fish. If you look like where you're right to point right now. I really like the spot.
Yeah. The
this is... The lake finally came up enough for me to get back in here. See that fish. And that that gives them a lot more food to act this. Mh.
Yeah. I mean, the lake keeps coming up and I imagine, like, those bugs that are down in there get wet and they pop up. Yeah. Yeah. That's with they're...
A week we gotta do a species at spotlight pump these guys I wonder hear the carp expert is in California.
If you'd... So Darren Ellen is probably fish from more than anyone. He's at a reno.
No. I mean, like an actual. Like,
scientist
biologist there's. That's a.
A burst there. Oh, yeah.
I would love it if we got one day.
Oh.
I
I just toss the fly Right. As hard as I could on forehead.
Geez.
Winds is picking up a little bit. It's making it a little bit more challenging.
Yeah. For sure.
Oh, look at her. Yeah. Give me the net. Right there.
They're big.
Hit the boat.
That's crazy. These fish are super powerful again strap the one here. Come on.
Give us a shot.
Now you want to.
You gotta do, Darren, as you come in here and do a little weed whack before it floods.
I get weed whacked.
Entire life's worth this year,
with all the late range. Now you were doing today. Yeah. I'm messing with weeds. Fran, lead wack and can't keep up
No.
I think a good tactic and this kind of stuff when you can't really see if they're taking your flies just to keep watching your the tip of your fly line. You know, on this... Yeah. If you see it going the going the other way. See on the water. Yeah. Well, it's A jan talks about that a lot and it's still water yeah. It's like, it's all the different. It's a great way to to
if you can't feel the bite be able to see it before before you feel it. Yeah. That's a good call. There's a a whole lot of three of them back here,
We'll disregard those for a second here.
Watch them mud.
Man, it's muddy.
There were just a shit on in of in here this morning. You're still in. Alright. You just keeping a couple hundred in here me came in the morning.
Alright there going away.
We're?
Good shot.
Man these are f
f, little creatures.
Do you look at right here right here? Right here. We just get a little scar, scarf face.
Oh Nope. He's gone.
So spooky.
Too aggressive, Darren.
That's...
Be totally honest that fish with spooked before he cast out. A little hard on the beef last my third nick.
Alright. That was my third or fourth sp. So I got one more and then you're up.
Mall.
Mall.
I wonder if the mics pick up out those wings met.
It's a cool night.
Or if it picks up those weeds scratching in the side of the boat, like a chalkboard.
Yeah.
It's pretty terrible sound. Isn't it? Then came up a little bit. You a tail pop up at noon there. Just watch that.
I wouldn't cast yet till you see him.
Darren been really good. I keep wanting the cast
prior to the fish being ready and he's up. Back. Alright. Then you got another tail flickering and that if you look off your raw tip point right just a hair.
Are you gotta see that weed. Just pointing at. Yeah.
A fish is tailed looking into that weed there. I can I can make it out? Yeah.
So I try to...
You get around the weed. You can try.
Where'd go.
He just mud.
Tough.
Very challenging.
I like it.
So it makes it cool. Yeah.
Whoa right right there. Right there at all that. Yeah.
Yeah.
Did they just all scattered?
Yeah. Wondering there the by scene behind car. Yeah.
Any spacing
his nose is off to the left.
Still one. Yeah. Yeah.
Come on.
Right here in front of me.
Fuck.
There you go.
K.
On.
There.
He moved?
Now. He's still sitting there. Yeah. And I mean, he moved towards it.
Yeah He's giving you the shots. That's good. It's nice. So.
Come on.
Come on.
Yeah. Perfect.
Oh,
did you feel it? No. I was watching them leader. Sure. I... Oh,
dude he hit it. Right? No. I know.
Just finally spooked. Get another one there nick. Yep.
Alright.
Too many too many shots right there, the lost didn't have a chance to up. Here... You hang on. If if we make a swap right now, all these are gone. Okay. Okay. No. I'm good to just Chilling.
Go for it. I'm gonna sit down there. Yeah. Do it like as slow as you can.
That won't be a problem.
Great job pulling man in the wind. Good job.
A little bit of practice.
A look at that bertha over there.
See at eleven.
Did it just go swoop? No, a little bit there. Not eighty feet.
Yeah. There's one looking in the tree there. Pretty much.
No. I'm sorry. That's not one. But that other other big ones shot out there. I'm gonna go over here and just kinda hold the boat.
The sunlight isn't in our favor looking this way.
But
we don't have the bow slap
from the wind chop on the bow.
So it'll help us.
Look at twelve.
Just two.
It's great.
Y'all. Got it all
Eat it.
Even shi
permit that when he ate.
Oh my gosh.
Oh
Are you kidding me. Oh, my god. I'm shaking. That was like the biggest build to something that average experience quite hey. You get one your last year. Holy shit.
Joke this one shoot. So was so cool. Even though you didn't come tight.
Oh, it was tight. Oh, man. I lifted at his nose out of the water. Yeah. Oh my, gosh.
Oh, good work dude. I mean, that was a great castle... I mean, you see the... Strip the fly right near the lane. Yep. Leg fly settled. And then the first one didn't look at it. The second one came in on top and just went remember. Rooted now and
what do the bike feel like?
They just pick it up. They don't like, hit. Good. Yeah. Danny. They're not, like trying to kill, you. I'm gonna blame the guide in his
core hook hook and... Tied that knot.
No. That's fly still there you're. Yeah. You you gotta try to make. Real real slow. Real. Yeah. Real quiet.
Almost telling.
Dang that was sick. Yeah.
Man.
It's that tail flutter and oh,
Yeah. If flutter just like a freaking permit does When they eat same thing. It's like, a little, like their body goes into, like a little shockwave.
Yeah.
Well, allegedly, that Perm eat. I'm convinced permit don't bite twice.
That was awesome.
Dang.
Yeah. That was pretty cool.
My heart's like pumping.
I wasn't even fishing.
Blood leather chat. Mh.
Dreams about that one.
See that. There's towed right there. Yep.
Count. Yep Okay. Kind of a work... I I'm I believe to. He just wanted the weeds. I just wait. Okay.
That was a perfect scenario where the fish were going across the bow of the boat. Yep. Not coming at us, not going away. They're were moving across.
I let it. Cass past a little bit. Yep. Stripped it into their lane. The lane. Pretty this. Do you see this guy? Yeah. He's a little farther out.
He's coming back toward us now. Point your rod right.
See that bush. Yeah. He's coming into that bush there. I'm gonna try to stake us here. Okay. This hole here. He's kinda wait until he... Yep.
Yeah. Oh, he turned there. Whoa. Did I sp him?
Probably. Well, yeah. So we got heavy sunlight on us.
Try now. You threw your hand, your left hand, you threw it, Try to Yeah. Keep your motions a little bit. Yeah.
That's great. That that fish
fifteen, twenty feet... Probably twenty feet off, thirty feet off. Yeah.
I'm sorry. It might not have been.
It might have just spoon. I'm still wet up the blue sky, and I got a blue shirt off.
That was pretty freaking and cool.
Damn.
Hang. I saw his little bubbles is whisk he's out of the water and orange pretty lit. I was right in his mouth and. Got a long shot here. He's on the edge of the green grass there right at your nine.
Seeing facing us.
If you can get it there get to them, yeah I'll have to wait. Fix my out get other.
Maybe get a little unfortunate
down.
That's too much line.
Yeah. Choke it back just to hair.
Sure. Yep.
Strip in twice. Pick up and go.
Well, a pick up and cast them there.
Don't shoot line.
Oh, we're looking at... We're you looking at different fish point
That one's, that might be jacked. Yeah.
The one I saw was over there,
but
Well, I cut a
some sort of bush.
Alright, Chad. Hang on.
Can you see him moving
out the right
Sharp point your rod
is backs out of the water right now.
Oh, yeah. Okay. Lay that one on his face. On the Backside of the. Right? Go over the bush.
Pick up and go.
Again, closer.
That'll come out.
See him facing out of that now. Yep. That's a better shot.
Good. Strip once.
Pick up and go.
That'll come off when you cast search chat. What you got.
How big do you think that was?
Ten twelve. Yeah.
I I lost him darren. He's facing left and the two other bushes.
Now he's coming out of there. Right. Yep. He's facing you right now.
Pick up and cast that much line right there. See him coming out of there. Just moving right.
Closer.
Strip.
Good.
Strip.
Leave it.
Cut them off. Pick them and go again.
Recast.
K. He's right there. Strip.
Strip strip strip.
I think you had it mouth. No. I
Yeah. I don't know.
That's tough one there.
He's on us now. K.
Again, Darn your diplomacy is
very very good.
Tell me no wasn't even close to his mouth sure.
Think about the pie. What the hell?
Smoking the gan.
This is extremely tough, especially for
me.
Well, I just don't... You've never done it before. Well, also Like, I just don't cast
precision cast anymore. Yeah. I don't drive flight ever.
Yeah.
Well,
They'll make you good at it.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know? I mean, little, Cross.
Yeah. Totally my hex game. Yeah for. Yeah. Just being accurate. You know? And,
you know, I'm gonna set up some shock glasses in my back Wanna get home. Sometimes using your your four finger, your finger, your pointer finger is a great way to increase your accuracy.
The problem with that, though is you tend to wanna push the line into the water little.
You're but sometimes it helps. So what do you mean by that? So using your point... Use your finger to point to your... Where your cast is gonna be? Oh, like, it literally points. Use your yep. Keep your finger on the rod Mh. And point the cast out.
Instead of, like, a thumb and turning your thumb over over. Hey may, I understand in theory now, but execution of, you know.
And sometimes trying, you know, a little quick practice. Like, you see a little weed. Mh. You know, just go make a Go okay. I'm gonna I'm gonna hit this right now one cast
throw boom. Right. Make a make a tent. You guys.
Okay. Since we've been talking about eighties movies.
Or good nineties movies we're back. A good nineties movie.
With Ryan Reynolds, It's one of his first films
before he got big Dan?
Waiting.
You guys
The restaurant? Yeah. Yeah.
What did you think of that one? What's your... Rating on that. This makes you think a little different about going to a
roadside diner.
The goat.
Oh, the goat.
I think we
kinda spooked those fish in here, blew it out.
