Hey. Welcome to another episode of the Barb Fly fishing podcast on your host Chad Aldi with me today. I have Dave Stewart. If you guys if you guys listen to Dave on his show,
wet
wet sw wet license.
I dude we literally just talk... I said, okay, Tom. I got pronounce it again. It's awesome what... It's awesome. It
Yeah. It wet fly wing pods. It's confusing because there's two flies in it. There's two flies. There's wet fly, there's fly fishing, but... Yeah, it's the wet fly wing podcast.
Thanks dude
Oh, yeah. No worries. Yeah. And and David and I met last year at the... What we were... Where were we the If?
Yeah.
Exactly. If twenty nineteen and and hit it off,
and and we've been in touch ever since back channel back and forth and, you know, his shit his shows awesome out of Oregon, and you guys cut... You you cover a lot of stuff, but, I mean, it's it's mostly steel head. Correct, Like, around that area that genre.
It's a it's a little mix. If you look at... Yeah. Mostly, it's a lot of steel hit, but I have since beginning there have covered everything around the country. But... Yeah, If you look at the show, it's Northwest focus. For sure. Yeah. Cool.
Yeah. And and
Dave Dave's just crushing it, and he's
he's actually doing it... He's launching another podcast. And we're gonna talk about that on this this bonus episode.
But first, we... You know, we were chatting. Well, we were about to chat about, like, how Covid is affected our the podcasts, you know, on the production and all that. Yeah. And
it's definitely... For us, it's... The main thing has been that we haven't been able to go into the studio
to have face to face recordings.
For so... Right. Right. And because most of our staff face to face, which, you know, our list. Forgot about that. Yeah. Most of our listeners have have grown accustomed to really high audio audio quality on from both the guest and the host.
But we've been doing... We've we've been forced to do a lot of remote remote episodes.
In terms of
our workflow, it's not much different. I mean, we we basically just
you know, let people remote in the the hardware that we have and also that Dave uses
allows us to do what's called a mix minus, so we can pull in, you know, things like audio calls, phone calls, Skype calls,
whatsapp calls, and mix it into the unit and and still have, you know, show. But, the trade off is the audio call. He's not that great. But with this particular episode, what we're doing is called a double lender. So because Dave has the ability to record his end, we're gonna get his audio from him in post, we'll... Marry the two together. So it's still... It sounds like we're in the same room, but we are in fact
two states apart. Right, Dave.
That's right. Yeah. That's right. So what's up with what's new? Like, how are you dealing with Covid?
First... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. I... So our podcast is definitely pretty much all remote. So not much has changed there. I mean, we're just kinda zip along and in fact, it almost... You know, I wouldn't say it gets easier, but people were around more. So
it's... You know, I have no problem with what we're doing. I mean, obviously, the Covid sucks. I mean, fishing closed. Right? You can't even go fishing now.
And I think that's the case in Washington. I'm just california is the same. Right? No. California.
You know, they they they're big is basically
I... Yeah. How the approached is that the counties have
control over whether or not the fishing season's open.
And gotcha. And it's basically a delay. On the season, it's not necessarily closed.
Till the end of the year It's it's
you know, they're they're seeking extensions until I believe the end of May, if from Jennifer...
Yeah. Yeah. I think that's how it goes. But there's only
three or four counties out of, you know, the I don't know how many... There's over... I think there's over forty in California that are that are closed. So there's only, like, three or four that are closed. The rest are open and our opener
is
this Saturday.
So Oh, right. Yeah. Which is... And yeah. Yeah.
And I guess I miss spoke a little bit, But, yeah, it's not fishing isn't closed up here, but all the boat ramps and Yeah. Access points. Yeah. Yeah. So our our state ramps are closed
you know, the ones that fallen under state jurisdiction and state funding are closed for sure. Yeah.
However, there's a lot of, you know, where we live in Northern California, There's a lot of,
county ramps and things like that that are still open.
So which is which is cool. So we've, you know, we've been able to...
We... We've... We're lucky up here, you know, We just... We've got enough water and enough options to to still fish. Yeah. Yeah. We still do it. Yeah. So doing... Yeah. So so, yeah. I mean, Covid Covid sucks. I'm hoping I was just talking my buddies in our our group last night, you know, about what they thought and I've got, you know, some guys in there that are, you know, business folks and
accountants and everything in just different fields. And, you know, they thought they were positive about it. You know, they were thinking we're gonna come out of this thing, you know, quicker than I was thinking. Yeah. So, yeah. Maybe hopefully in the next month or two or so, you know what I mean? Maybe we kinda get back to a place where we're You know, I don't think we're gonna be meeting up in bars in close quarters for quite a while, but, you know what I mean? Maybe we'll be able to get out a little more. Never underestimate humans
per, you know, push to reproduce my friend.
Yeah. You yeah. You may see people at the bars and restaurants sooner than you think. I think there's a lot of pent. That's right a lot of pent up demand.
I know.
Yeah. We... We... I had... I actually had dinner with some friends last night. I went over their house.
Broke quarantine for... Like, I just... It's been six weeks now, you know, and I I finally... I went over to friend's house
and had dinner last night. We had a pretty interesting conversation about, you know,
the
I guess, like, what's gonna be different afterwards and and it was... Yeah. It was cool. I don't wanna get into that because that's a sit completely separate yep. Topic, but... Right. And what was what was cool is, like,
one thing I took for granted is just that communal experience of, like, sitting down with people and actually having dinner that are outside your normal social circle and just, like, you know, hearing new ideas and fresh ideas and just, you know, just having discourse was cool, you know?
Yeah. Yeah. There's there's no...
Yeah. I mean, the in person stuff, obviously, the Zoom and all that crap is is okay. But, yeah, shaking a hand and but
but, yeah I mean, I I mean, the big thing I have going,
like, you alluded to is this new podcast I'm launching, and I I could dig into that a little bit if you wanna hear about, you know, why why I'm doing a second podcast? Man. I I would love to. That's why we're doing this one. So, yeah, let's... Yeah. So what what is it... Like, what's the name of it first and then we'll kinda back into why. Yeah. So the name
So the name is kinda long, but it's really the only thing you have to remember is outdoors online. Okay. And and the and the idea... And the idea is is right, outdoors online the two
kind of,
to me, they seem like opposites. Right? Outdoors is online, but it's the outdoors online marketing podcast.
Okay. And basically, the idea is is that I'm gonna be serving
a lot of the fly fishing companies and businesses and
you know, businesses in the outdoor space as well, helping them grow their influence online. That... That's what is focused on. As I've been
I've had success with this the wet fly swing podcast.
I've realized like, you, you know, you probably see it as well. Right? I mean, you see this thing. People are loving
you know, the podcasting thing. It's a a great way to connect with people. So I'm And I've had people reach out to me and ask me about, you know, they're struggling with things. Right? They're struggling with Youtube. They're struggling with social media, and they're struggling with all this stuff. And and even though I'm... I don't consider myself a super, you know, expert on it. I know I've been in the online kinda space for, you know, since, like, twenty fourteen. So I know a lot of the the people, the guru. Yeah. People that are doing it the right the right way. So I'm gonna be interviewing a new
expert
online marker every week.
And Okay. And I
Yeah. So it'll be... Basics are... The target listener is gonna be somebody that's, like, managing a an outdoor brand and is looking for... Or it could be, you know, a an... Like, a a, you know, Solar guide. Right? Yeah.
Yep. But ways to, like, maximize
Seo, maybe how to... How to buy ads on on Google and Facebook, stuff like that?
Exactly all that. I I've already I already have ten episodes in the bag first episode launches
April twenty seventh this coming Monday, and it's
it's with, Evo terra who's been podcasting since the beginning since two thousand four, and he goes into a podcasting Seo and stuff like that. So that's first episode. I think I'm gonna I do that. That sounds pretty good.
Yeah. Yeah. Got... I've got a good list. I I actually... You'll love this one. I I I've... And here's the power of podcasting. This is the message I wanna share
with people, you know, just on podcasting. Right? Because that is part of online marketing.
I mean, if you have a podcast... I mean, the Wet f fly swing is a good example. I've interviewed a hundred and thirty eight of the biggest names in fly fishing, you know, from around the world. Right?
There's no way I could done that without a podcast. And and that's the power and now that I've start this new podcast. I mean, I have Eric News I'm coming on. And he is the guy who created,
the Ted hour podcast,
Terry Gross. I mean, he's the Npr guy who he's the podcast podcasting godfather. Yeah. That's super cool, man. That's really cool. And I have him coming on to talk about his new book called Make noise, which is an amazing book that teaches you how to
not just the tips and tricks of podcasting, but basically how to do a podcast the right way. And so that's what I'm all about. I mean I'm... I've learned that, I mean, serving people is
it's you know what I mean, that's why we're here and and I think that,
I plan on helping these companies, a lot of them you know and work with to to help them just grow. You know, even if it's one little tip each week, that's that's cool. I'm I'm definitely gonna listen because I I know it sounds like I can definitely get some value out of it for what we're up to. You know, Well one thing we're... We we just really suck out is is
Facebook and Instagram. Like, I I know why we suck, but it's it's really... You know, to do it right, you... I think you need
you need either the person that runs a company also needs to be a photographer or you need to hire somebody
that's kinda of basically on contractor on staff to just focus on, you know, creating content
And it's just really tough to do if you're not staffed, you know, the founders don't do that, you know, as a trade. It's no. It's tough. You know, it's real tough, and then also balancing this plus your normal work is is it's just, like, a time thing and then skill thing and and it all comes down to basically money. Like, I would love to be able to have somebody on stuff that we could just send send out with guides and takes photos and things like that. And I just haven't... I've been struggling with how to how to level up, you know, our our Instagram content.
And you know, you can. I mean, you look at our feed and you can just tell it's it's not really... There's no cog coherent strategy to it right now. And and I know I know all the problems and Know what needs to be done, but it's just like...
I know. I hear you. Well,
that... That's a... In the way you... And you said it the word right struggle. I mean, I've I've been since I've been building this podcast Have been reaching out to, different businesses in the outdoor space in doing little calls, you know, coaching calls to find out what those struggles. And now I'm producing
episodes that are tackling. So you just said it, I've got my second week is gonna be a in... Instagram expert. Yeah. And and even though she,
you know, I mean, obviously, she coaches. Right? So if you wanted to check on her, but she gives a bunch of tactics, including one, which is this hashtag tactic, which I've already implemented,
and it's it's basically,
you know,
kinda helped out big time on on the Instagram. So... She's gonna talk about that hashtag tech stuff on one of your episodes. Oh, yeah. On week two. Yeah. I mean, she talks about for an hour. She sits there and talks about all... It's all Instagram. How... And I and I took it from because I had a guy that reached out to me like you said, he was a guide. Yeah. And he's new to it, and he was struggling with Instagram, and basically, we went from the start like, how do you start, how you do your profile, the whole. But one of the things she talks about is this super secret...
Instagram strategy
that she that she teaches. And it's amazing, man. It's already basically
I... The post I put out. You know, it's already raised it up above most of the other ones. So that's fantastic.
Okay. Yeah. We're... So it's little stuff like that. Yeah. And Yeah. You know, we,
Instagram for those people that don't know.
Instagram got this kind of tiered system. So if you have ten thousand followers or more on your account, you can do a lot more stuff with Instagram. So that's kind of, like, everyone wants to get to ten thousand because it opens up a lot of functionality on Instagram. For example, like, we sell hats on our on on our website. Right? If I take a photo of
you know, someone wearing one of our hats today post on Instagram. I have no way to tag that hat in the photo as as, you know, so that you can buy that hat.
So you can't do any outbound links off Instagram unless you have at least ten thousand followers, and that's like a big deal. Because once you hit that, you can actually... You you can really turn the... Turn your Instagram account into more of a... A transactional based platform as well. Really really drive... Push the, you know, drive the needle on on sales if you're doing an online sales.
But, you know, we've been relatively stagnant on on our followers on Instagram,
I mean, yeah. We're lucky dude if we pick up, like, ten a week, you know? And I know having I cracked three thousand followers on Instagram, and we've got, like, twenty thousand downloads a month on the podcast. So there's no correlation between the amount of listeners you have on your podcast and your Instagram. They're completely separate is what we're finding out. You know? And I don't I don't know. You know, we've asked people to follow on Instagram are on on the show, but it just doesn't really... I don't know. It just doesn't
doesn't happen. Yep. It's
it's hard. And again, like I said, this... I think I have some strategies that'll probably help that a little bit. And and I'll have more Instagram people at, you know, as as we go and Yeah And I... Like you said, I've got a Facebook ads person, a Facebook group person coming. I've got a blog. You know... I'm just gonna put... Basically, all the online marketing stuff and of the questions that that you have. I'm I'm hoping to tackle best killer and, like, anybody listening that that's either, you know, got a small business
medium sized business even if it's not a fly fishing business, I think all this stuff would apply to them too. Yeah.
That's right. Yeah. I mean, I'm I'm focusing because I I like... I think the focus of, you know, the riches are in the niches, I agree with that starting out kinda it. And you you right Your your... Or your network is the same way It's powerful.
But, yeah, I'm gonna be thinking of of the outdoor company, the fly fishing company, but this... The tactics, for example, this Instagram episode will help anybody anybody that wants to learn about Instagram. That's super cool, man.
Yeah. I'm looking forward to listening to it and, hopefully,
you know, getting some nuggets because, I'm really really struggling with what to do on Instagram.
Totally Do you... You guys are doing good too though. Yeah. I mean, you know, I was gonna say, Chad, you guys I mean, like, the the... Your knowledge and the website,
the website build and the stuff you've done. Yeah. You know what I mean? I mean I I haven't... I... There's one other outdoor podcast that interviews is kinda outdoor brands that are doing... You know what I mean But... That's not where I'm going. I'm going at another route. Right? I'm I'm thinking more just the expert. But you're kind of an expert in your space. Right, designing websites it... I mean, that's... Well, do you... Would you say that's true? Well, here's a deal, man. Like, technology, you're never an expert because it... It's always changing. Right?
It's kind of like, it's kinda of like the beach when the when the the tide crush is on it and it just kinda morph over time technology landscapes coming way. So you gotta... You you kinda have to adapt. But to answer your question more directly, I've been doing it since
ninety
seven.
So Yeah. I've got a lot of experience, and I've done a lot of different roles, and, you know, I've managed
all all types of teams from small small companies like I have now to, you know, larger stuff at ebay.
So, yeah. I mean, I I I think I know what I'm doing. People pay me to to, you know, people... Exactly. My team pretty decent. You're getting paid for it Right. For them. Yeah. Yeah. So,
Yeah. I mean, I know... Like, our website's awesome. Like, I... We you know, we put a lot of investment into that in time and sweat,
and it does really, really well on Seo, like, if you...
Yeah. If you Google any of our guests,
just their names.
Typically, we're on the first page of of search results and that was very very much architect from a search engine
optimization perspective to to make that all happen.
So it's Yep. Like, we're good on the website. Stuff. We're good on the design. We're good on the branding, but our Instagram and Facebook and all that stuff sucks. And it's just... It's it's really just, you know, personal time investment because right now, this is the other part that I wanna talk to you about is, like,
we had a pretty good pipeline of advertisers
ready to go, like, right before the shit hit. And then it's like, you know, it just kinda dried up, which I understand. You know,
and people... The folks that we were talking to were pretty pretty,
you know, upset that they couldn't... They they just didn't have the budget or it was just a little too, you know, a little too soon to commit to something.
Given what the context of this... What this thing is. So I I understand. So we... You know, we're just kind of, like, in a wait and See mode. We're still pushing content out.
Yeah. Those folks are still very much in the pipeline, but, you know, we just you know, we gotta...
Everybody's weather in the storm right now, and no one really knows what's gonna happen. So...
Exactly. Yeah. And I I have a Rob Walsh coming out. He's the he's the head guy at Lips, you know,
our host our hosting company, and he... Yeah. We chatted about that a little bit, and he compared it to, you know, he he he looked at back in twenty, you know, o eight. Right, that the the collapse there. And I'm not sure if we're gonna be at that level we probably won't be. But, you know, he talked about advertising then. Right? Because that was the last time. And a lot podcast weren't around. Weren't podcasting in O eight, but he talked about how long it took to get those advertisers back in the podcasting space. And he said it was... You know, it was a couple years. Oh, wow. Two or three years is what he said. And, you know, this is this is different, maybe. Yeah. Well, it's it's way different and here's why
podcast
advertising that in two thousand eight was, like, hey, we're gonna we're gonna strap a rocket it on a win big. I don't take it to the moon. It just no one here. Right?
Nobody did. And it's... It had... It hadn't been really popularized
in, you know, the marketing circles and the the conferences and things like that, but that's... It's a completely different landscape now. Yeah. And there's a lot twelve years. There's a lot more discipline around how
how the values articulated and sold as well. You know, there's some pretty. You know, I heart radio and others are are kinda leading the charge on on how to go about,
you know, even packaging up advertising.
And, you know, we've just Yeah. We've... We've put together a lot of lot of material. In the meantime, just kind of, you know, hedging to when this happens, we... We've got a lot of material in place that we can, you know, clearly articulate our our value to to advertisers.
You know? And yep. It's not... And we also one bottom line sure that we... The advertisers we bring on or actually, you know, match the brand and bring value to or listeners. You know, I'd it's... You're not gonna get any viagra commercials or anything. Us. Exact. Well I think that's a great point is that, you know, if you go to a company and you say, you know, give me a dollar and and, you know, we'll give you two back or whatever. I mean, right? I mean, it doesn't matter if it's a down economy or not. You know, advertising still works. If you could show them Yeah the the Roi. Right?
Yeah.
Yeah. At the same time, I... There... There's a content strategy that we wanna make sure it doesn't get diluted as well. You know, I don't I don't wanna bring any an advertisers. It's not a good fit for us or we feel doesn't bring value you to our listener. So... Yep. Definitely.
Yeah. So
that's cool. So what's the name of the the podcast again one more time?
Yeah. So if you just search
outdoors online, it's the outdoors online marketing podcast. Okay. And then where is that gonna live online? Or are you gonna be... Is it gonna be under your current website? Or is it a whole another way? No. Standing up. Totally separate. So it... It's at outdoors online dot c.
Okay. Okay. And then I assume the Instagram account is gonna be that that too, then there's gonna be a separate. Yeah. It's... Okay. Yep. Yep. Instagram. It's all separate to be outdoors. I think it's
Twitter. It's... I think it's outdoors online podcast on Instagram. Yeah.
And outdoors underscore online on Twitter.
It's pretty much outdoors online. Once it starts getting picked up more by all the search engines, I think just outdoors online,
we'll be... I guess it's it it might get confused with outside online. But right, which is the other a mega company out there. Yeah. Well, I'll I'll be... I know I'll I'll personally confuse it because I can't even say your your first one correctly. I all. No. It's all good. I'll send you directly link. I'll send you the url. Be great. And, also,
if you could when you post a story about the launch of it. If you can,
you know, just... I don't know. Let let me know so we can share it. Okay? Yeah. I will. Okay. I will. Or just tag us, but, like, make it really, really subtle, but a way for us to share it into into our thing would be cool.
Definitely Yeah. You'll hear about it next week. I'm gonna
go as strong as I can to, kinda promote it on both, you know, wet fly swing and and the new channels. Well I'll start listening. I'll be sure I'm gonna publish this
this bonus one.
Early next week. I think Monday just so it get... Oh, sweet. Just ahead of time. Okay?
That'd be awesome, man. Alright, man.
Anything else before you wrap?
No. I think you know what, and one one other thing I just wanna note. I'm not sure exactly how many shows you have. Do you still have the four in your your network? Yep.
Yeah. Yeah.
I told John, I've I've checked in with him a few times and told him he's killing it, but, man,
that you guys I love loving that show, Man, and it's pretty pretty You know I mean? I I love what he breaks out the f bombs and stuff. It's just like...
Yeah. It's perfect, Man. It's like, he... It's his personality I made the guy is just... He knows his stuff and you know, you just having conversations. One of the best human beings I've ever met my life, and I don't put that lightly.
You Exactly. Guy
good stuff. So keep up, keep up the good work and looking forward to your guys as, you know, new shows as they come out to. Alright, brother. Thank you.
