Kamchatka, Russia has established a reputation for two things: being home to some of the world’s largest steelhead and having a large number of bears. Each year Kamchatka’s many bears and a few fortunate anglers cross streamside paths in a shared pursuit of the elusive steelhead. In order to protect their clients, local Kamchatka guides use dogs to keep the hungry bears at bay. Enter Kuchook - arguably the most bad-ass alpha dog in the region. No other dog was as respected and loved as Kuchook. Sadly, Kuchook was brought down by a bear recently. Greg Kennedy-one of the locally famous Fish Kennedy Brothers, started fly fishing in Mammoth lakes of the Eastern Sierras, where his dad started fly shop. Greg moved to Redding, CA 2002 and the rest is history. The two brothers have been expanding and growing their business, and recently have had no available days to guide due to demand. The fly shop Greg’s Dad started,“The Troutfitter,” is still very successful, but the pull for bigger water and steelhead is what keeps the brothers in Redding. Listen up as Greg talks about his very exciting trip to Russia, where he participates in scientific research in order to fish the area. Greg also compares coastal California trout to Russian trout.
