Speaker 30:45

Hey. Welcome to another episode of the Marvelous Fly fishing podcast. I'm your host,

Speaker 30:50

chad Ole and Nick is in a meeting today. He's got you know, it's busy, busy times on Covid,

Speaker 30:56

the Covid chronicles continue here, guys.

Speaker 30:59

So today's date is I didn't need to look. I don't even know. I just kinda lose track of time.

Speaker 31:06

Today is the twenty fifth of March, and it's four thirty Pm.

Speaker 31:12

The the Congress just released a two trillion dollar

Speaker 31:15

stimulus package for the economy.

Speaker 31:18

That just happened about an hour ago. It looks like

Speaker 31:20

So that's good news, but, you know, hopefully, we can

Speaker 31:24

rainy day it and and make it work.

Speaker 31:27

So with us today is Michelle Titus and John Fa machete from

Speaker 31:32

clearwater

Speaker 31:33

quick clearwater water lodge. And are you guys in Fall River, Bernie? I can't... I always forget Fall. River mills Yeah Fall River mills. How are you guys doing?

Speaker 41:43

I'm doing Can. I'm I'm doing alright.

Speaker 31:46

Yep. Yep.

Speaker 31:47

So how are things going on the ground there. You too. Like, we have, you know, Michelle, if you guys don't know about Michelle She owns a lodge called the clearwater lodge up in

Speaker 31:58

Fall River,

Speaker 31:59

and John's her head guide there that runs a guide program,

Speaker 32:03

and he also,

Speaker 32:04

is does guide guiding...

Speaker 32:07

Like, what what what do you call it when you're a Solo guide person owner...

Speaker 52:11

Independent things. An independent guide. Yeah. Yeah. See. I I learned something new every day doing a show. So... Yeah all of the guys actually that work out of clearwater

Speaker 52:20

independent guys.

Speaker 52:22

I

Speaker 52:23

I just contract with them based on their availability.

Speaker 52:26

So they each have

Speaker 52:28

their own book of business and work a variety of waters, both during

Speaker 52:34

my season, which is a trout season and then then through the

Speaker 52:37

fall

Speaker 52:38

and winter and into the spring.

Speaker 52:41

So this is impacting

Speaker 52:42

all of them, you know, away from

Speaker 52:46

whether or not or when the lodge is gonna be able to to reopen again? Yeah.

Speaker 32:51

Well,

Speaker 32:52

typically, right now, you're kinda, like, gearing up for opener and and I I assume getting the lodge kinda dialed up. Yeah.

Speaker 52:59

Yeah. So I'm used to, you know, shelter and places kinda of when my life are the winter too.

Speaker 53:06

I'm down here, and I lived in here around.

Speaker 53:09

So we're closed. I keep

Speaker 53:11

you know, a maintenance staff, but,

Speaker 53:13

yeah. There's always

Speaker 53:15

upgrades and,

Speaker 53:17

ordering and stuck in the fly shop and those kind of things, but it's it's really quiet. This is my time to travel. In fact, right now. I'm supposed to be in Hawaii. I was appreciating a wedding on Friday that's

Speaker 53:29

with postponed. I'm gonna it in their backyard and policy on Friday. Oh just four of them. How many, weddings have you done?

Speaker 53:38

It's my first one. They were very brave. Very good friends and very brave. She's my she's my bet. My horse... My e declined surgeon, and we've been really dear friends over the last six years. So

Speaker 53:49

He punt Nas for me to do that. That's cool. So I ran the chef the county and got d ties, so I could barely when you to... You're given the a pass to do a one day wedding. So I'm gonna pull that off on Friday. Are you nervous?

Speaker 54:05

No. I'm

Speaker 54:07

redoing vows right now. We're kinda of what I'm gonna say. Again, it's really gonna be quiet. We're gonna face facetime her father in and, hopefully Jim's parents.

Speaker 54:16

I don't think I'm nervous. I think I might cry. I'm sure I'll cry. But... Yeah. I'm pretty excited. It's an honor, and

Speaker 54:23

it'll be a lot easier without

Speaker 34:25

without an naughty and psychic. That's cool. I've done... I've three weddings.

Speaker 34:29

And I was nervous for the first one. It was my sisters, but then after that, it was pretty chill.

Speaker 34:34

But yeah. Yeah. I got Or ordained through the universal life church, you can go to Right. Online and you can even get your dog ordained if you wanna I think, probably.

Speaker 34:43

If I can get our game. The Hawaii. Anybody can. Hawaii was easier.

Speaker 54:47

Cow find just a little more strict about what you have to do. Well, the Shaft County. Was strict. I had. Yeah. Go up here in person and do some crazy stuff that I didn't have to do for Hawaii. But... Go. Onward and, and then we... I had a group, I put together a hosted trip in April. Yeah. Simple belize,

Speaker 55:05

we were supposed to leave the eleventh, and that, just got

Speaker 55:09

shut down in the last few days, so we've reschedule for, a year from now. April tenth we're gonna go. So Yeah. It's impacting, you know, I think it's impacting

Speaker 55:18

personal. For me, it's impacting personal fishing and personal fun

Speaker 55:23

a little bit more differently than on the ground

Speaker 35:25

day to day life here. Yeah. It's pretty quiet for me, normally. Can you guys kinda talk about a little bit about when you book these either large or destination trips how the deposits work because there's a lot of people that I think don't... If they have book if they have trips booked right now.

Speaker 35:44

Maybe don't understand how the the whole money situation works on the back end. My understanding is if you're... The... Even if you're the independent and you're the one that's too in hosted trip, you have to kinda, like, front the money almost to make those to make those work, and I know on the large side you do, is that is that accurate?

Speaker 56:00

So for a hosted trip, you know, typically, you're guaranteeing

Speaker 56:05

a facility during a a set day That you're going to bring x number of people and it can be anywhere from six to ten as kind of the

Speaker 56:14

the norm. And if you're able to

Speaker 56:17

bring in

Speaker 56:19

that number of pain guess,

Speaker 56:21

you've, you know, reached your milestone. I've not had anyone... I mean, I've not been required to pay anything up upfront. It's just they will only hold days for you for a certain period of time while you reach out and get them filled.

Speaker 56:36

You know, But if you

Speaker 56:38

don't have it filled and you say to them, don't worry about I'm gonna fill it, then, yeah, I guess you'd be on the hook to to come up with that money.

Speaker 56:45

From,

Speaker 56:46

and and in working, again, the the lodging believes they're being good to us, there,

Speaker 56:50

you know, gonna move our resolutions forward, and I've even asked them to

Speaker 56:56

refund back, you know, the the fine... We all made our final payments to refund back that final payment to

Speaker 57:01

the three other couples that are going and just keep the half deposit

Speaker 57:05

until next year. And we'll see what they say. But...

Speaker 37:09

I think that's my.

Speaker 57:11

Yeah. I don't think that's bad thing asked. I'm not as worried about me, but I'm worried about people, but, you know, I made arrangements for this thing and drug people into this.

Speaker 57:20

From my standpoint here running the lodge, you know, we start booking out a year ahead of time,

Speaker 57:26

as a lot of our... Our guests book the day they lead for either the exact same week or something comparable in the coming season.

Speaker 57:36

And

Speaker 57:37

I typically around the first of the year start collecting or once our season is ended, then I collect a deposit, and,

Speaker 57:44

you know, that keeps their space, you know, the situation here, were relatively small. We can have up twenty two guests.

Speaker 57:52

But people book these kind of trips in advance. And so collecting a deposit, a

Speaker 57:58

more or less ensures that you're gonna have guests show up because we aren't in a business where people call at the last minute. Yeah.

Speaker 58:05

You know, with five days free or three days free and driving five hours to come and stay.

Speaker 58:10

I so far have not had any requests

Speaker 58:13

or cancellations, had a couple large groups that just due to company policy and the current situation with the virus

Speaker 58:21

can't have any group trips in q one q two. So we moved them into July and August. Mh.

Speaker 58:28

But, you know, at this point, my guests are are happy to sit back and wait and see what's gonna happen. We're not scheduled to open until mid May,

Speaker 58:36

So I think,

Speaker 58:38

you know, I'm comfortable waiting until mid to late April and then making that call as to whether or not

Speaker 58:45

we need to be,

Speaker 58:46

you know, pushing

Speaker 58:48

reservations forward, if anyone wants their money back, of course I'm gonna do that.

Speaker 58:53

And and I think any of us in in a that are small business owners are going to do whatever it takes to maintain

Speaker 58:59

good relationships with our guests who we rely on to come back year after year. And John can talk,

Speaker 59:05

to the

Speaker 59:06

impact this is having gone independent guide. I think they maybe run a little less tight

Speaker 59:12

financial mentorship and don't always require deposits, and that may

Speaker 59:16

be, more of an outs for them, John. Yeah I know you mentioned to me you've lost some bookings lately. What's going on with you?

Speaker 49:24

I lost all of my bookings. I have nothing

Speaker 49:27

scheduled for the next

Speaker 49:29

two months.

Speaker 49:30

Everyone's canceled.

Speaker 49:33

I returned everyone's deposits because I just felt like that was the right thing to do right now.

Speaker 49:39

You know, I mean, obviously,

Speaker 49:42

people all said they would re book, and and and I'm sure they will, but You know, who who knows when that's gonna happen. So this has definitely been a a huge

Speaker 49:53

financial,

Speaker 49:56

yeah. I mean, it's hurt for sure.

Speaker 410:00

And it's the same way with every, you know, independent guide that I know,

Speaker 410:05

in the North State right now. I mean, no one Yeah. Is working.

Speaker 410:09

You know, and more. I don't know, you know, personally, what everyone's doing about deposit.

Speaker 410:16

I know some people have people,

Speaker 410:18

you know, already kind of re booked for later in the year, the problem, you know, that I have is kind of a little more unique where the log starts up, you know, in May. So I don't book a lot of my own trips from

Speaker 410:34

you know, May to,

Speaker 410:36

November. It's mostly

Speaker 410:38

large trips. So,

Speaker 410:41

you know, I probably won't

Speaker 410:44

recoup the losses from,

Speaker 410:46

from, you know, these couple months this year. It'll probably just be a loss.

Speaker 310:51

Yeah.

Speaker 310:53

You know, with this... With the stimulus package that they... The Congress just approved, there's... There there must be provisions in there for situations like this, John,

Speaker 311:02

I am trying... You know, I'm trying to put together an episode that talks specifically

Speaker 311:08

to you know, folks like yourself in the position you're in right now and all those other guides and, you know, basically, like, small shop owners and folks like that.

Speaker 311:17

I'm trying to get somebody a professional expert on the show to kinda talk about what the options are.

Speaker 311:23

Within the context of those those types of of businesses.

Speaker 311:27

So if anybody listening knows anyone that could come on and and kind of, like, parse that subject with us,

Speaker 311:34

and and just answer a bunch of questions that we have, will probably have you know, an actual guide on as well just to to get, you know, to get those questions straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

Speaker 311:45

We really could use, you know, some insight there. I've got a few feel out, but these are, you know, ones to a a payroll company that I... That I work with that had put out some nice documentation and seem to have their their finger on what's going on, but I don't know if I'll be able to get them on yet.

Speaker 512:00

Well, until the... So the the current package that hasn't passed, the one that's being w around in the senate of the house, is the one that's going to address small businesses and individual payments. The,

Speaker 512:11

the initial doc... The initial

Speaker 512:14

stimulus stimulus one is,

Speaker 512:18

more directed towards

Speaker 512:20

financing,

Speaker 512:21

medical assistance and such. So,

Speaker 512:24

when that happens, I'm happy to turn you over to the professionals that I'm working with currently. And it sounds like there's going to be some small business loans,

Speaker 512:33

some in the form of grants mostly in the, unfortunately, in the form of loans for small businesses,

Speaker 512:40

unless it's been removed. There is a provision for independent contractors, the gig economy kind of workers, which is where guys would fall into. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 512:49

To be able to receive that, you know, twelve hundred dollar payment.

Speaker 512:54

If they're filing taxes that they're showing

Speaker 512:56

revenue,

Speaker 512:58

I know they're... They have been trying to find a way to fit those people in, which would also include a lot of, you know, bargain or waiters, waitress, people who Yeah. W two reflects not necessarily a lot in revenue, but mostly in ten ninety nine

Speaker 513:14

tips and things like that. So Yeah.

Speaker 513:17

I think we're a few days away from

Speaker 513:19

understanding

Speaker 513:20

what help might be coming,

Speaker 513:23

but it but it certainly,

Speaker 513:25

you know, could be a little bit that that helps

Speaker 313:28

everybody. Yeah. Michelle, I'll probably take you up on that If if I can't get someone from this other company that I've... I'm working on to get... To come on, and I wanna I wanna try to get that episode up, you know, at later next week if possible.

Speaker 513:44

In the meantime, people can official bone.

Speaker 513:47

I know Johnson taken his girlfriend out. I see a lot of guides finally teaching

Speaker 513:51

you know, teaching teaching wise, teaching thousands, teaching dates, teaching mates.

Speaker 513:57

Individuals out

Speaker 513:58

Is

Speaker 513:59

still okay.

Speaker 514:01

I think I think it's unfortunate and where we are and so many of the the fall winter type trips are in your boats. So that probably is a frowned upon

Speaker 514:11

getting in the boat with strangers

Speaker 514:14

situation, but walking and waiting. Why not? You can easily be six feet away from someone

Speaker 514:21

and getting yourselves out on the water,

Speaker 514:23

continuing the pipe flies is continuing to

Speaker 514:27

purchase your equipment for the coming season from our local fly shops.

Speaker 514:33

I think that that is something that we can all do to

Speaker 514:37

help all of our friends and family in in the industry.

Speaker 314:42

Yeah.

Speaker 414:43

Yeah. I don't know. I don't know well, what, you know, how this goes for guides right now. I mean,

Speaker 414:49

I'm seeing a few people out working here and there. There's... You know, I had a guy call me that wanted to come up from the bay this week and

Speaker 414:57

you know, obviously, I'm in that weird situation right now where it's like, well, do I really wanna be having someone from the Bay Area come up and

Speaker 415:06

be in my boat with me, but at the same point, at at same time, it's like, well, how can I turn down money right now, You know?

Speaker 315:13

Yeah. And I I think that's a pretty common struggle for a lot of people right now, John, You know?

Speaker 415:18

I don't... I mean, I think if somebody wants to come up and bitch with me right now, I'm probably gonna take the trip. You know? My thing, what I was gonna do with the guys, you know, that I kinda talk to was you know, we'll be in the boat together. I don't think that's that big of the deal when we're outdoors. You know, we're not gonna be,

Speaker 415:36

you know, right on each other's spaces. You know? So we're a couple feet apart in the boat, and I told them you know, bring all your own food and bring all your own drinks and

Speaker 315:48

I'll bring all my own food and my own drinks. Yeah. I I honestly think it's it's gonna... It's kind of on a case by case basis. It's, you know, in terms of regional stuff because

Speaker 315:58

I wouldn't walk six feet away from someone in Central Park in New York. I'll tell you that, you know, No. Right. So Right. So it kind of, you know, again, I'm no doctor, but, you gotta just be smart about it.

Speaker 316:12

Are you tying flies or anything and just kinda, like, building up inventory or, you know, in in, you know, in hopes that once once things lift, you'll be able to push that inventory out fairly quickly or what, you know, is there anything you're doing?

Speaker 416:25

I am moving

Speaker 416:27

into a my new house right now. Oh, Talking about financial professor. John just closed Escrow and bought a new house. Yay for Jones to support the economy.

Speaker 416:37

Yeah. I don't know if this was

Speaker 416:39

the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life. Or a smart thing.

Speaker 316:43

Take it though.

Speaker 416:45

To be determined.

Speaker 416:48

Yeah. I'm definitely a little breath at the moment with

Speaker 416:53

money, but I'll be alright for, you know, I mean, if I didn't work for a few months here

Speaker 416:58

at all. I'll be okay after that. It's gonna start to get a little

Speaker 417:03

sketchy.

Speaker 517:05

I think we all see a lot of our friends, so definitely, you know, H Brown post videos. So

Speaker 517:10

Tai Tai thai. Matt Cal uses Tai Tai tie. And I think a lot of our friends who

Speaker 517:16

you know, maybe they don't necessarily sell their own flies, but they rely on using them for

Speaker 517:21

you know, if their signature tie flyers the companies that they're affiliated with those the ones tying in their flies.

Speaker 517:27

If they've got some side jobs or some side clients who buy from them. Great.

Speaker 517:34

You know, but I do see a lot of our friends in the fly fishing community.

Speaker 517:38

I think I've seen more flight tying snippets on and stories

Speaker 517:43

in the last few days By typically see in two weeks or a month.

Speaker 317:48

Yeah.

Speaker 317:49

And, you know what? Go ahead, John.

Speaker 417:52

People are still getting out of the water for sure. I mean, this last weekend, I was out on the stack and it was

Speaker 417:58

so busy that I actually got off of the water. I pulled my boat off the water because it was crazy.

Speaker 318:05

Yeah.

Speaker 518:06

I bet in three days it's not gonna be, like, at or probably even than today.

Speaker 418:11

Well, I mean, with the cooler weather it calmed down, but it was, you know, nice over the weekend, and,

Speaker 418:19

It it was crazy. I mean, people are still getting out, but I just... I don't know. I don't know how long that's gonna last. I know a lot of other places are completely like, Clear lakes completely closed down.

Speaker 418:30

Care made closed down.

Speaker 418:32

Yeah. Pyramid closed down. I mean, there's a lot of places

Speaker 418:35

that are closing down. So

Speaker 418:38

I guess, we'll see if they continue to keep the stack open and cha lake and, you know, all that stuff that you yeah. Still can go out there and

Speaker 518:47

I saw you today that Yosemite and,

Speaker 518:51

gosh what park here. I just... My brain just turned off.

Speaker 518:57

I have closed. Those national parks have actually closed here in California. So

Speaker 519:01

we're seeing some even though the the initial was get out and enjoy the outdoors, take advantage of our state parks in our national park,

Speaker 519:11

they're shutting those down.

Speaker 519:13

I think they... Won they don't want to have employees.

Speaker 519:16

In contact, the rangers not in contact people etcetera, so from a safety standpoint,

Speaker 519:22

more and more and more every single day,

Speaker 519:24

the government's,

Speaker 519:26

unfortunately being put in the position of,

Speaker 519:29

liability. And

Speaker 519:31

we did get an email today from the chef at Trinity National forest where they are

Speaker 519:38

not doing anything face to face a few employees are still going into the offices up in Mount Cha.

Speaker 519:44

They have not shut anything down.

Speaker 519:48

Yet, from a youth standpoint for

Speaker 519:51

for people to be out, but I'm sure they're having to reconsider or consider some of that again just to protect

Speaker 519:59

and protect their employees?

Speaker 320:03

Yeah.

Speaker 320:04

You know, that...

Speaker 420:05

Yeah. I mean,

Speaker 420:07

go for it.

Speaker 320:08

Well, I was gonna I was gonna say that,

Speaker 320:11

you know, I I think that California still...

Speaker 320:14

I think, you, I don't wanna, I don't wanna be, you know, put bad thoughts in people's heads, but I also wanna make sure that, you know,

Speaker 320:22

you're you guys are aware we're still very much behind the Abel.

Speaker 320:26

Just based on, you know, what's coming out of out of the,

Speaker 320:30

you know, out of the governor's office in terms of the numbers and whatnot and what you're seeing and, you know, trend wise in New York, it's it's pretty... It's pretty gnarly. I I still feel like, you know, if it's a tsunami, that water still going out, and it hasn't hit in California yet.

Speaker 320:44

So, you know, just just be prepared for it to get

Speaker 320:48

worse than it gets better, but I think it, you know, it it could snap back just as fast. It just kinda depends on you know, I I think one thing about our countries is you know, we're pretty... We we rise to the occasion in terms of adversity,

Speaker 321:02

and this will be a challenge for the, you know, for this generation. So

Speaker 321:07

Absolutely it.

Speaker 521:08

Well, I don't have any testing seen. I think it's put us all in a position of,

Speaker 521:13

again, I live up in such a remote area. Yeah. There's nobody up here in Chest County so far has had

Speaker 521:20

limited, but we've had a adapt now,

Speaker 521:23

and

Speaker 521:24

limited exposure, but there's no testing. So Yeah. We don't really know that there's limited exposure. You don't really know that there are,

Speaker 521:32

you know, whether odds are with you are against you and and even in extremely populated areas,

Speaker 521:39

whether it be the Bay area or Los Angeles,

Speaker 521:42

nobody

Speaker 521:43

were not we're not capable yet of testing enough people

Speaker 521:47

to know anything, and then I think even what's more important and hopefully, we'll get here just as quick our,

Speaker 521:54

test to determine whether or not you've had the virus and whether or not you've got any immunity to it. I think that

Speaker 522:01

will be the one that can open the door to allow for a return to some normalcy,

Speaker 522:06

not just knowing

Speaker 522:08

potentially who sick and how sick and and the the strain on our medical system, but

Speaker 522:13

if in fact, you've been

Speaker 522:16

exposed, you've had the virus you you might know it or you might not know it.

Speaker 522:20

Are you immune or are you still shedding anything. Is there anything that that allows or causing you to still be contagious and.

Speaker 522:27

There's just so much I'm unknown right now. We all need to do our part

Speaker 522:32

and stay away from people.

Speaker 522:35

Keep keep not only self safe, but keep everybody around you say.

Speaker 322:40

Yeah. And and still, you know, try to

Speaker 322:43

people get spun up,

Speaker 322:45

you know, emotionally spun up during stuff like this and just try to, you know, be

Speaker 322:50

be nice to people, you know, go out of your way to be nice to people.

Speaker 522:54

Yeah. I I've mailed people toilet paper. I I,

Speaker 522:58

because of the business I'm in, we have a lot of toilet paper. And so I have in the back of my car. So people ever were left over from last season, I didn't go out and buy it or have to hoard it, and

Speaker 523:09

I've actually mailed toilet papers of people.

Speaker 423:13

If you need toilet paper call me. We did me and Michelle did a a, like, toilet the paper drug drug deal in the parking lot, like, a week or two ago. It was very fine. Damn.

Speaker 523:24

Yeah.

Speaker 523:25

But but we do, we wanna be kind other. We wanna understand, you know, in the biggest thing the takeaway here is this is the greatest equal

Speaker 523:34

amongst every single person who walks our earth.

Speaker 523:37

No one will come away from this unscathed,

Speaker 523:40

we will all be battered. We will all be scarred, but we will all be okay. And Yep. I think if if we can all sit back and and

Speaker 523:49

take that step away from

Speaker 523:51

what's happening to me and be super thankful that

Speaker 523:55

I'm just here, and I'm healthy, and I am gonna make it through whatever this is, that I hope my parents stay safe. I hope

Speaker 524:04

you know, my friends and my family and people, I don't know. I just I hope that we're able to wrap our arms around this thing and save as many people as possible.

Speaker 524:12

Yeah. That's what matters because we are so resilient as a people.

Speaker 524:17

And we're so resilient of a country. We're gonna see those world war world war era,

Speaker 524:23

manufacturing, you know, kicked back in. And all the things that people had to live without in order to support wars.

Speaker 524:32

We can do that for a period of time. I'm I'm hoping that we're not gonna have to do that for a terribly extended period of time. But I think all of us can

Speaker 524:42

find ways to keep ourselves sane and keep ourselves

Speaker 524:47

happy at home and satisfied knowing we're doing the right thing. It's super fun where even up here where I live, again, in the middle of nowhere,

Speaker 524:56

people are taking this serious and

Speaker 524:58

you know, small gyms that exist here, they've immediately figured out how to do Facebook live and still hold, you know, individual

Speaker 525:07

trainers are posting

Speaker 525:09

their exercise routines at the same time, you know, their classes would typically be held.

Speaker 525:15

There's great meditation. There's a lot of Levi. There's a lot of jokes going.

Speaker 525:21

But I think there's so much out there that all of us

Speaker 525:26

when we feel like we're missing something. We're not. There's there's ways thank God with social media and and with the Internet,

Speaker 525:33

to be able to participate in group events

Speaker 525:36

over an Internet feed. And to continue to extra exercise, continue to go outside walk when it's safe and in

Speaker 525:44

in your

Speaker 525:46

communities

Speaker 525:46

without impacting other people.

Speaker 525:50

One of my daughters just sent me a great link that

Speaker 525:53

the state of New York. Their problem right now is they've run out of dogs to adopt.

Speaker 525:59

And so many people are doing things like realizing,

Speaker 526:02

hey, we can go get a shelter dog now because

Speaker 526:06

Guess what? We're gonna be home for two weeks. We now have the time to train the dog. We now have the time to be home with this dog and to get it to become part of our family, and and, of course, in a few weeks and a few months, we're all gonna have to go back react. They can return it. You will have no Now. I just kidding. Kidding. But, you know, when you get a puppy or you get a new dog, you need that time to

Speaker 526:29

assimilate them and you're environment.

Speaker 526:31

To train them and to work with them. And then and then, of course,

Speaker 526:35

they're gonna be okay at home without you or not.

Speaker 526:39

But you can train them and you can spend that time with them and imprint them, And now is the very best time. You know, I'm gonna veer off from the life machine as what's in it for us situation and say, if you have the desire,

Speaker 526:52

go to your local

Speaker 526:54

humane society. And

Speaker 526:56

as long as it's something that once you return to work, you can still be a really good pet owner

Speaker 527:03

find that animal that your family has always wanted that you didn't have time for

Speaker 527:08

and take this time now. That's great...

Speaker 527:10

There's a project for the whole family right there. That's right. That's right. And then course you know it trained and

Speaker 527:17

boom, and then you gotta work and you've got a crate friend. You've got a dog door that it knows how to use,

Speaker 527:22

I ended up booth who really elderly pops, a, couple weeks ago, in a in a bad situation. And

Speaker 527:29

They were scared. They're tiny, and I have huge, you know, golden galore retriever, But man, now, I've... They've been here for three weeks. They're ripping in and out of my dog door.

Speaker 527:38

They are part of the family. They jumped up on the couch with the big dogs, and

Speaker 527:43

If if

Speaker 527:44

anyone out there listening can go and do that and help save a pet.

Speaker 327:48

That would be a encouraging thing do. They'll sit right there at your feet while you're tying your flies. Hey, Michelle. Tell tell our listeners, How many how many pets you have in in the variety of pets?

Speaker 527:57

Because I think it's awesome... I think I'm feeding twenty eight right now.

Speaker 528:01

So I have four horses for many donkey,

Speaker 528:05

four dog.

Speaker 528:06

I don't know. Twelve cats.

Speaker 328:10

I have a lot. I have a... Do you have any... Do you have any Tigers?

Speaker 528:14

I don't have any Tigers or Lag or Zebras.

Speaker 428:17

See, Mike Tyson has Tiger. Well you used to have a tiger, but not anymore. But Yeah I don't need that new show on Netflix. It's all about that new that re on the Tiger?

Speaker 428:26

Or

Speaker 328:27

I started in it looks so

Speaker 328:29

so nuts. Yeah. It's on my... It's on my watch list. I know exactly what you're talking about. That guys off the off the chain. Yeah.

Speaker 528:36

Completely. I won't even do goats. So you got you got Netflix.

Speaker 328:42

That's not me you can do with yourself. Yeah netflix foot. I I really. I really like that that adopt a pet

Speaker 328:48

message though. That's really cool. Thank you for suggesting that one.

Speaker 528:52

It's a it's a great thing And again, that families

Speaker 528:55

individuals. All the things that you... All these things that we said we don't have time for. We have time for. I love the folks that talk about, you know, kids that are home from school.

Speaker 529:04

You know, now's it's the time to teach them how to check the oil and they're in a car, whether or not they're big enough to drive. You know, how do you check air pressure on a tire? How do you cook an egg? Let's get get get home and get down to basics of

Speaker 529:17

here's some, you know, real life skills that when we're also busy and we're all going in a million directions, we don't take the time for. And whether it's your kids, your grandkids,

Speaker 529:28

we're all home now is our little insulated families.

Speaker 529:31

Now's is that time,

Speaker 529:34

I've actually cleaned out a couple closets and done a few things that I should have done a long time ago, but if I had small kids around now would be the time where

Speaker 529:42

it would be really fun to

Speaker 529:45

you know, teach them how to bake, teach them how to follow a recipe,

Speaker 529:49

find some ways to give them,

Speaker 529:51

long term life skills, u, away from

Speaker 529:55

their phones away from the screen,

Speaker 529:57

we get outside and we play.

Speaker 330:00

And we learn and and learn some fun things. Yeah. Had a buddy... I've got a buddy that I had a conversation with. The other night and for, like, an hour,

Speaker 330:09

and he's basically, like, you know, the cool thing, if there is a cool silver lining to this is that he's, you know, the... As a family, they eat out, like, five five days a week because both of him and his wife for, like, professionals, and they they work crazy hours.

Speaker 330:24

And

Speaker 330:25

he was, like, you know, we've been working from home, and we have, you know, we're done pretty much at five, and then it's, like, we have all this time now, and we're getting our groceries delivered through via Insta carts. So So we... The whole family's cooking, Like, my daughter's were really into cooking and she's, like, learned how to do this this this. And I just... I thought that was cool. You know, and to your point, it's just kind of, you know, it's it's kind of

Speaker 330:48

letting families

Speaker 330:50

that nuclear family you know, that they kind of was born in bread in the fifties kind of become a thing again for at least a little bit, and it gives people a taste of what that's like. You know? Because

Speaker 331:01

I still think that that generation is still the best. And if we can, you know, Yeah. There's their search. I think there could be some cool stuff that comes out of the bit. Yeah. Like, I do too, man. I really do but I really do. I mean, my worry is,

Speaker 431:16

you, you know, we kinda just fall back up. Status quo. But soon as things are status quo, you know, everyone just goes back to what they know.

Speaker 431:24

And, hopefully, it doesn't, you know, people still continue continue you to

Speaker 431:28

do that kinda cool stuff with their family and

Speaker 331:31

I know that I... Yeah. No worries. Things will go back to normal. They have to go back to normal, but the... I think the difference is gonna be that there's gonna be a level of

Speaker 331:41

of, self awareness and gratitude.

Speaker 531:44

That happens with people this time around that that I think wasn't there before. That's my... That's why. And the skills you've got your kids, even though we all go back to normal, they go away to college, guess what they can cook.

Speaker 531:57

You know, they they grow up and go on in their lives, whether it's a week or a month or two months that were locked in right now.

Speaker 532:06

They're not gonna forget what they learned.

Speaker 532:08

We may all fall back into those old patterns, but we're not gonna forget what we learned. We're not gonna forget the joy we had. The next time we lose power for an hour or twenty four hours.

Speaker 532:19

We're gonna remember

Speaker 532:21

how easy it is to get through that. Alright? You pull out the lantern, and you pull out a board game,

Speaker 532:27

and,

Speaker 532:28

gosh. We had to do this for two months. We can do this for a day. We can do this for a couple days. Yeah. I think I think there are long term

Speaker 532:38

benefits

Speaker 532:39

and always the silver lining when when we go through these things as both as individuals, as families,

Speaker 532:46

and as a country.

Speaker 332:47

Yep. Well say. I hope so.

Speaker 332:51

What do you guys think? Is that a good spot to wrap?

Speaker 532:54

Yeah.

Speaker 332:55

Okay.

Speaker 332:57

Okay. Well, you an animal? Well, when...

Speaker 332:59

Yes.

Speaker 433:01

We could always be just go both take our boats out on the river and separate boats and go fish for some stripe one of these days. You better

Speaker 533:10

one of you. What I could be on one of... I wanna be on one of those boats.

Speaker 333:14

Okay. Yeah. I'm totally down to do that, man. It's like, I think next week's is gonna we're getting one little push of water here and then next week it's supposed to be in the, like, low eighties down down here in Chico.

Speaker 333:26

And, you know, provided Provided, we can get access to the launches and it's not stupid to do so. I'm down. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And,

Speaker 433:36

Michelle, I will see you tomorrow. I'm gonna

Speaker 333:40

borrow the horse trailer. Oh, do you guys... Up for? Do you guys wanna talk about what we've been side about before we cut you loose?

Speaker 533:48

Yeah.

Speaker 333:49

Who wants to start.

Speaker 333:51

Well, I'll start.

Speaker 433:53

Are you talking about that we're gonna add on with you? Yes.

Speaker 433:57

Yeah. Yeah. So so we've been

Speaker 434:00

talking to Chad and

Speaker 434:03

Michelle, and we're gonna

Speaker 434:05

do

Speaker 434:06

our own little podcast,

Speaker 434:08

but add it on to

Speaker 434:11

Chad and Nick Northern California podcast. So we're probably gonna do

Speaker 434:15

well, one or two a month. Yeah. And

Speaker 434:18

you know, do topics that kinda pertain to our water

Speaker 434:23

up in the inter mountain area.

Speaker 334:26

Be more specific, John, like, list off some you know, sit some towns in some waterways, so people know because these are places that we we touch on, but we don't cover in detail on the Nor cal show. So can you kinda like, get into details on a little bit better. Yeah. Yeah. Our waters that will cover up there and, you know, not limited to these, but we'll talk Pat Creek, we'll talk Fall River,

Speaker 434:50

Bernie Creek,

Speaker 434:51

Bomb,

Speaker 434:53

Hit River, Mc mcleod River,

Speaker 434:56

maybe a little bit on the upper stack.

Speaker 435:00

And then, you know, we have a bunch of lakes up there as well. And

Speaker 435:04

you know, not only fishing. We'll talk about

Speaker 435:08

conservation. We'll get some cool people that are you know, locals up there that have been in the area forever. The war stories. Got some... Yeah. I've already got some cool ideas of a few, you know, old timers to to bring in.

Speaker 435:23

I know we had talked about bringing

Speaker 435:26

you know, Carson who is

Speaker 435:28

Uc Davis,

Speaker 435:30

fisheries biologist and those are waters shed, you know, the scientific

Speaker 435:35

side of those waters shed better than anyone

Speaker 435:40

definitely get him on there to talk about some projects they've been doing up there.

Speaker 535:44

We've also got Cal traps gonna be here, Gosh, at least four times during the season with

Speaker 535:50

group.

Speaker 535:52

And so we've got, you know, Curtis Knight and Drew Bra, who can talk about specific projects, both going on up here and then throughout the state.

Speaker 536:00

One of the great things about this lodge is the diversity and the variety of the guests we have here.

Speaker 536:08

So I think they're gonna be a few times where we just have

Speaker 536:11

little round discussions with guests,

Speaker 536:15

who...

Speaker 536:16

For water for reason or however, they got involved in the fly fishing community,

Speaker 536:20

they have really

Speaker 536:22

interesting backgrounds themselves. Yeah. They're personal in their business lives. And then we can talk about how that plays into

Speaker 536:29

you know, the joy of fly fishing and and what it means for them to be out on the water and to be in touch with

Speaker 536:36

with the with a fly fishing community. So we've talked about,

Speaker 536:41

again, just that variety and that sweet spot in the guest clientele help we have here.

Speaker 536:46

There's a bringing in a little bit of,

Speaker 536:48

the the experience, not just

Speaker 536:50

it isn't about the lodge. It's about

Speaker 536:53

wife people fly fish, how they end up on the water.

Speaker 536:58

We've got a lot of generational

Speaker 537:01

guests here, you know, grandpa,

Speaker 537:03

adult children and grandchildren. And all come up together there. And I think that's gonna be

Speaker 537:09

you know, speaking with some of those groups who

Speaker 537:12

come year after year after year. We get to watch their children grow up. We get to watch them interact with their parents with their grandparents.

Speaker 537:19

We get to watch them learn this beautiful, beautiful sport a fly fishing. And, you know, it's the highlight of their years. They travel all over the world, but the one thing they want to always do is

Speaker 537:31

come back here in fly fish, and and kinda just get back to that simplistic

Speaker 537:36

being in nature. So we're really looking forward to sharing what goes on here. Yeah. You know we're bringing some light lighthearted around

Speaker 537:44

around the sport in addition to

Speaker 537:47

the,

Speaker 537:48

the scientists and the biologists and the

Speaker 537:51

the game warden so that, you know, we we get to interact with again because we're in a small community. So we'll be able to to pull in people and get some

Speaker 538:00

reflection on,

Speaker 538:02

both on a a really a local

Speaker 538:05

pinpoint

Speaker 538:06

topic, but then we can we can spread out and talk about,

Speaker 538:10

you know, who and why

Speaker 338:11

people are up, not just here, but ending up on the water. So think it's gonna be a lot of fun. Yeah. And then in terms of, you know, the audio qualities once once we can all see each other's faces again.

Speaker 338:23

Audio quality is gonna be the same as it is across the entire network it, like, the... You guys are used to listening to.

Speaker 338:30

High end high end gear,

Speaker 338:32

good mics and great great conversation. So

Speaker 338:36

look out for that, we're make a big announcement on it when it's... When it... When we got everybody back back on the... By being along the way. Yeah. We're definitely looking forward to it. That's gonna be fine. That's gonna be coming Thanks.

Speaker 338:48

Absolutely.

Speaker 338:49

Yeah. Okay, You guys. Well, thank you very much.

Speaker 338:52

What why don't we talk about the P. You too. And and really quick, the website. Facebook

Speaker 338:58

Instagram really quick before we cut loose?

Speaker 539:01

All these things. Clearwater lodge dot com.

Speaker 539:04

If

Speaker 539:05

Facebook is

Speaker 539:07

clearwater lodge pit River. Our Instagram is clearwater lodge.

Speaker 539:11

John, you've got here on things.

Speaker 439:15

Mine,

Speaker 439:16

my Instagram is bose We,

Speaker 439:19

and,

Speaker 439:21

website is John Fa machete Fly fishing.

Speaker 539:24

Foot chevy, the Machete, for machete. Yeah. And if you're looking for guides, we've got such a great network of

Speaker 539:31

independent guides that work with us. We're always happy to when when the time is right to get you out on the water with with any of them.

Speaker 539:39

You know, John and and

Speaker 539:41

the boys and gals that

Speaker 539:43

that I'm lucky enough to get to have come work here with our clients,

Speaker 539:48

just are phenomenal in

Speaker 539:51

personality and skill and patients in teaching, and we'd... I'm always happy to

Speaker 539:57

you know, provide contact information and send,

Speaker 540:01

guests or strangers their way. That's my best interest to keep all of them working them on the water so. Yep. If you're ever just wondering. If you ever wanna talk, they're all really good about talking about flies that work in water that's fishing well. And

Speaker 540:15

and, almost all of them have now gotten into fire fishing for bass. In fact, John and Ryan,

Speaker 540:21

were just in a bass tournament on Lake S,

Speaker 540:25

couple weeks ago. They were the only

Speaker 540:28

fly machine team.

Speaker 540:29

And I think came in twenty first out of sixty.

Speaker 340:32

That's pretty cool. That's not bad. You know, first. Yeah. There's a lot of people. A lot, a lot of guys up here getting getting more into bass on the floor.

Speaker 540:41

Mean. And so we're happy to talk to people and work with people around that, you know, find other ways

Speaker 540:46

to get out on the water. It's not just trout. There are a lot of species and there's, you know. A lot of leads to

Speaker 540:51

you know, get yourselves out on the water, and I have to say we have the most generous

Speaker 540:57

network of guides who are happy to share information and happy to,

Speaker 541:01

you know, help you be successful. You don't have to hire them. They're just really really

Speaker 341:06

good young men and women who, love the sport and and I'm really, really happy to share it. Cool. Well, thank you Once again, you guys. If you like this episode. Chad. Yeah. For sure, man. If you guys like this episode, please leave us a review on your podcast player wherever you get your.

Speaker 341:24

Check out our website, w w w dot barb dot c.

Speaker 341:29

And

Speaker 341:30

most importantly, thank you Cal out for keeping the lights on as month over month, you guys have been

Speaker 341:37

you know, helping us out big time. To keep the, you know, keep our editor, editor paid and keeping this train going. So if you guys wanna support the shell, support Cal out by proxy. Thank you very much. Can I jump in on that? Yep. I'm sorry. But, you know, Cal out had to

Speaker 541:55

unfortunately, not... They're not gonna be able to hold their kayla, which is typically held in the city,

Speaker 542:00

May the first week in may for Friday in May. So they're going to be doing virtual,

Speaker 542:07

sales and having,

Speaker 542:10

both,

Speaker 542:12

you know, online auction items. So typically, when you're at that event, there's live auction and

Speaker 542:19

private or sign auction items they are putting together a platform in order to be able to offer all the great trips all the great items to get donated.

Speaker 542:28

Oh, that's cool. And, yeah. So, at some point, Barbara will make sure you guys have a link both from their site.

Speaker 542:34

And if you can...

Speaker 542:36

Go ahead and go to the... It's cal trap dot org, and what an amazing,

Speaker 542:41

amazing

Speaker 542:43

organization doing work in throughout the entire state of California and even up into Southern Oregon. Oh, and down. Yeah. And, you know, fish water people,

Speaker 542:53

not just driven towards fish at ecology, but the understanding that fresh water

Speaker 542:58

is life for all of us.

Speaker 543:01

And so if you've got a chance, look that up, we are auction off even spaces for the five challenge.

Speaker 543:08

Cool. There are... Yeah. You can get into his drawing for the five year challenge. So which is the tournament we hold up here, out of the, out of the lodge this year in September. But

Speaker 543:19

I'm gonna chime in and be a cal truck supporter. I love the fact that they're supporting Barb and and what you're doing sharing great information

Speaker 543:28

but they're also just a fabulous

Speaker 543:30

organization to align yourself with

Speaker 543:33

always doing something invent and fun.

Speaker 343:36

Absolutely.

Speaker 343:37

Man. Well, you guys stay safe out there, keep your family safe.

Speaker 343:41

Bat down the hatch. It'll get better soon, guys.

Speaker 343:44

Thanks for listening soon. Care. Take care.

Speaker 443:47

Later Chad.
