Big Trout, Two-Fish Limit
Henrys Lake is a shallow, nutrient-rich natural lake at 6,470 feet near the Montana line, and its Yellowstone cutthroat, brook trout and cutbow hybrids grow fast and large. Ice usually leaves in early May and the weeks after the Memorial Day opener fish well along the shorelines. Trout drop to the 12-foot weed beds through midsummer, when algae, weed and afternoon wind make the going harder, then fishing picks up lake-wide in October and holds until ice forms in November. Leeches, damsel nymphs, scuds and chironomids stripped or hung under an indicator do most of the work. Special rules apply. The water inside the posted Staley Springs boundary and within 100 yards of Hatchery Creek is closed to fishing. From February 15 through the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, trout fishing is catch-and-release, brook trout included. From the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through February 14 the trout limit is two, with brook trout counted in that limit, and fishing must stop once two trout are in possession. Launch at Henrys Lake State Park or Bill Frome County Park. Check the current IDFG rules before you go.
