Where the observations come from

We do not make the observations. Guides, fly shops and outfitters do: people who were standing in that water this week, with a reputation riding on what they say about it. Their published reports are the field observations behind every Barbless report, and each one is cited and linked on the report it informed. The people are listed on the guides and outfitters directory.

How a report is written

Source reports are checked nightly for meaningful change. A change that is only a weather widget or a rotated headline is ignored; one that says something new about the water is ingested. The report you read is then written over the ingested observations and the instrument data for that water together: the gauge’s flow and temperature, the season’s hatch calendar, and the regulations in force. It is a synthesis of named sources, not a rewrite of one, and it is dated to the day the observations were made.

Reports are drafted with software and published under the Barbless.co name. They carry no individual byline because no one person observed the water; the byline would be a claim the process cannot support. Every report links the sources that can.

The standard

• Every claim about conditions traces to a cited source or a named instrument.
• Every report shows its date. A report is never re-dated to look current.
• A water with no recent source says so, rather than filling the gap with a guess.
• Flows, temperatures and regulations come from the agencies that publish them, never from memory.
• Nothing is written to rank for a search query. A page exists because the water does.

Corrections

If something is wrong, tell us with the page address and what you saw. Factual errors in a current report are corrected on the page the same day we can confirm them, and the correction is noted on the report. Errors in a dated, archived report are corrected in place with a note; the archive is a record of what was said, so the original date stays. If a source turns out to be unreliable, its future reports stop being ingested.

Independence

Guides and shops are cited because they are the source, not because they paid to be. Listings in the directory are not ranked by any commercial arrangement. When a paid placement of any kind exists on this site, it is labelled as one.
