Conditions

Typical late-September conditions are shaping up nicely on the Lochsa. As of September 27, flows were running at 415 cfs near Lowell, down from earlier in the week and low enough to open up pocket water and deeper runs. Caddis and mayflies are active during the warmer parts of the day, along with smaller attractor patterns. Consider working weighted nymphs, small sculpin, and baitfish patterns alongside the dries.

Techniques

  • Spend some time looking for pockets with enough depth to hold fish, particularly around larger rocks and areas where faster current meets softer water.
  • Smaller dry flies can still be effective, especially during the warmer parts of the day. Caddis, mayflies and smaller attractor patterns are worth carrying.
  • Streamers are worth working through the deeper runs. A small sculpin or baitfish pattern can be a good option when surface activity is limited.
