Big Wood River

Expect extremely low, clear water through early September on the Big Wood—this is a challenge-and-reward scenario demanding stealth and precision. Fish will be holding in shallow riffles above deeper runs, seeking oxygen and current breaks. As of September 4, flows were running much below normal and falling further, with overcast skies and cool temps (lows near 49°F, highs around 62°F) offering decent conditions for sight fishing. Red Quill, Baetis, Tricos, and small crane flies should be active, with occasional flying ants and hoppers working when conditions align.
