Short Trout Streamer Leader, 3X

A 30" streamer leader for trout on a sinking line or sink tip. It is two pieces: 12" of RIO Powerflex 0X (15 lb, .011") as a butt, joined with a triple surgeon's knot to 18" of 6 lb Drennan fluorocarbon. Kept short so the fly stays down where the line takes it.

How to tie it

  1. Build the leader

    Join the 12" 12" of 0X (15#) Rio Powerflex to the 18" 18"-24" of 6# or 8# Drennan Fluorocarbon with a triple surgeon's knot.

  2. Tie on the Streamer

Tie the Streamer to the 18" 18"-24" of 6# or 8# Drennan Fluorocarbon with an improved clinch knot.

The knots

  • Triple surgeon's knot · 3 turns×1
    1. Lay the new line alongside the end of the leader so they overlap about six inches, the ends pointing opposite ways.
    2. Holding the two lines as one, tie an overhand knot, passing the whole new piece through the loop.
    3. Pass the same ends through the loop twice more, three times in all.
    4. Wet it and pull all four ends evenly to seat the knot. Trim the tags.

  • Improved clinch knot · 5 turns×1
    1. Pass the tippet through the hook eye and pull about five inches through.
    2. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to seven times.
    3. Pass the tag through the small loop just above the eye, then back through the large loop you just made.
    4. Wet it and pull the standing line so the wraps snug down against the eye. Trim the tag.

When and how to fish it

Use it when trout are holding deep along banks, in runs and below riffles and a streamer has to get down. Cast across or down and across, let the line sink, then strip the fly back with pauses or let it swing. Most strikes come on the pause or at the end of the swing, so keep the line hand ready to strip-set. Tie the streamer on with an improved clinch knot.

If the fly rides too high, the leader is not the problem: give the line more time to sink before stripping, or slow the retrieve.

Common questions

  • Why is it only 30 inches long?

A short leader keeps the streamer at the depth of the sinking line. A long leader lets the fly float up above the line and defeats the sink tip.

  • Can I use it on a floating line?

It will cast, but the fly will ride shallow. It is built for a sinking line or sink tip.

  • Why fluorocarbon for the tippet?

Fluorocarbon sinks, resists abrasion on rocks and wood, and is harder for trout to see in clear water.
