How to tie it

  1. Build the tapered leader

Join the 24 ft maxima Chameleon to the 24" maxima HV with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 12" of 12 lb with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 12" of 10 lb with a triple surgeon's knot. Add a backing Barrel with tag onto the 12" gold Stren, 5' 6" above the Tungsten Jig Streamer.

  2. Add the tippet ring - heavy

Tie the tippet ring - heavy to the 12" gold Stren. Tie 36" of 2X to its other eye. Add 24" of 2X with a triple surgeon's knot.

  3. Tie on the Tungsten Jig Streamer

Tie the Tungsten Jig Streamer to the 24" fluorocarbon Tippet with an improved clinch knot.

The knots

  • Triple surgeon's knot · 3 turns×4
    1. Lay the new line alongside the end of the leader so they overlap about six inches, the ends pointing opposite ways.
    2. Holding the two lines as one, tie an overhand knot, passing the whole new piece through the loop.
    3. Pass the same ends through the loop twice more, three times in all.
    4. Wet it and pull all four ends evenly to seat the knot. Trim the tags.

  • Improved clinch knot · 5 turns×1
    1. Pass the tippet through the hook eye and pull about five inches through.
    2. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to seven times.
    3. Pass the tag through the small loop just above the eye, then back through the large loop you just made.
    4. Wet it and pull the standing line so the wraps snug down against the eye. Trim the tag.

When and how to fish it

Use it in pocket water, deep runs and along banks where a streamer needs to fish close and deep. Cast upstream or across, let the jig streamer sink, then lift the rod and work the fly with jigs, drops and short strips while the mono stays off the water. Watch the sighter pieces for a stop and set firmly. It is a nymphing setup for streamers, not a long-distance stripping rig.

If the streamer swims too high, the fly is too light for the current. Tie on a heavier jig streamer rather than adding shot, so the mono rig stays direct.

Common questions

  • Why fish streamers on a mono rig?

The thin mono has little sag, so you feel and see takes the moment they happen and can jig the fly through pockets with precise control.

  • Why 2X fluorocarbon?

Streamer takes are hard, and fluorocarbon sinks and stands up to rocks. 2X is strong enough for a size 8 jig streamer and good trout.

  • Can I cast it a long way?

Not far. It is meant for short, controlled presentations close to you, not long casts and long strips.

  • Can I switch to nymphs?

Yes. Cut the 2X tippet off the 4 mm ring and tie on a nymph tippet, and the same mono rig nymphs.

  • A long thin mono rig for euro nymphing: 312" of .012" Maxima Chameleon, a 24" sighter of 12" of Umpqua Sighter and 12" of RIO Two Tone Indicator (both .009"), and 48" of 5X fluorocarbon tippet to a tungsten bead nymph. Triple surgeon's knots join the sections. At 384" overall the thin butt does the work a fly line would, with far less sag.

  • A 10-foot tarpon leader for an 8-10 wt rod, aimed at juvenile and mid-size fish. The butt steps down from 42" of 40 lb mono (.024") through 30" of 30 lb (.021") and 18" of 20 lb (.017") to an 18" class tippet of 15 lb mono (.015"). Last comes a 12" bite tippet of 30 lb fluorocarbon (.020") to stand up to a tarpon's rough mouth, with a 1/0 Tarpon Toad on a non-slip loop knot.

  • A simple euro nymphing leader that attaches to a standard fly line: 18" of 30 lb Stren (.022") and 18" of 20 lb Stren (.017") as a butt, 48" of 10 lb P-Line fluorocarbon, a 15" Amnesia sighter, and 36" of 3X P-Line fluorocarbon (.008") to a tungsten bead nymph. Three 4 mm heavy tippet rings join the lower sections, so the sighter and tippet are easy to replace. It is 135" overall and carries no indicator or split shot: the fly is the weight.
