9-Foot Classic Wet Fly Leader

A 9-foot wet fly leader that steps down from a .019 inch butt in seven sections to 18 inches of 5X (.006 inch) tippet. The even taper turns over soft hackles and small traditional wet flies on 3-5 wt rods and lets them swing and drift with life in the current.

How to tie it

  1. Build the tapered leader

Join the 30" butt to the 18" mid with a blood knot. Add 12" of .015" with a blood knot. Add 10" of .012" with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 10" of 1X with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 10" of 3X with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 18" of 5X with a triple surgeon's knot.

  2. Tie on the fly

Tie the fly to the 18" tippet with an improved clinch knot.

The knots

  • Blood knot · 5 turns×2
    1. Overlap the two ends by about six inches.
    2. Wrap one tag end around the other line five times, then bring it back and pass it between the two lines where they cross.
    3. Wrap the other tag end five times the opposite way and pass it back through the same opening from the other side.
    4. Wet the knot and pull the two standing lines steadily until the wraps seat. Trim both tags close.

  • Triple surgeon's knot · 3 turns×4
    1. Lay the new line alongside the end of the leader so they overlap about six inches, the ends pointing opposite ways.
    2. Holding the two lines as one, tie an overhand knot, passing the whole new piece through the loop.
    3. Pass the same ends through the loop twice more, three times in all.
    4. Wet it and pull all four ends evenly to seat the knot. Trim the tags.
The triple surgeon's knot, step by step
  • Improved clinch knot · 5 turns×1
    1. Pass the tippet through the hook eye and pull about five inches through.
    2. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to seven times.
    3. Pass the tag through the small loop just above the eye, then back through the large loop you just made.
    4. Wet it and pull the standing line so the wraps snug down against the eye. Trim the tag.

When and how to fish it

Fish it on a floating line when fish are taking emergers and drowned insects just under the surface. Cast across and slightly downstream, throw one mend to slow the fly, then let it swing on a tight line and feel for the grab. In slower water, cast upstream, let the fly dead drift, and lead it up at the end of the drift so it rises like a hatching insect.

If the fly lands in a pile, the tippet is too long or too light for it. Shorten the 5X, or swap it for 4X when fishing bigger or heavier wet flies.

Common questions

  • Why 5X tippet on a wet fly leader?

Soft hackles and small wet flies swim more freely on fine tippet. For bigger flies or strong fish, swap the 18 inch 5X for 4X.

  • How do I keep from breaking off on the grab?

Let the fish take the swinging fly before lifting, and hold the rod off to the side instead of pointed straight at the fly. That gives the 5X some cushion.

  • What rod and line does it suit?

A 3-5 wt with a floating line. The .019 inch butt matches that range.

  • Can it fish deeper?

Cast farther upstream and mend slack so the fly sinks before it starts to swing, or use a lightly weighted wet fly.

  • A 12-foot leader for fishing soft-hackled spiders upstream on freestone rivers. A 90 inch mono taper steps down from a .017" butt to 5X at .006", then 54 inches of 6X tippet finishes it. The long, fine tip lets the spider land softly and drift naturally just under the surface, where trout take emerging insects.

  • A wet fly team leader for swinging three flies at once. It starts with 72" of tapered leader cut back to 3X, then 4X Maxima Chameleon in 6", 18" and 24" sections joined with triple surgeon's knots. Two 4" tags off those knots hold the droppers, and the point fly ties to the end. The team covers three depths on every swing.

  • Gary Borger's 7.5-foot leader for flies you move, finished in 3X: 51" of .020" butt, 13" of .013", and 26" of 3X (.008") tippet. The short, stout design keeps the line straight to the fly, so stripped and swung wet flies and nymphs stay under control and takes are felt. It casts well on 4-7 wt rods.

A 3/4" trapped-air indicator, one No. 4 split shot and a #16 Tungsten Bead Pheasant Tail make it a ready-to-fish indicator rig for riffles and runs.
