10-Foot Long Wet Fly Leader for Light Rods

A 10-foot wet fly leader for light 3-5 wt rods. It tapers evenly from a .019" butt through seven steps to a 22" tip of 5X at .006". The length and fine tip let a soft-hackle or wet fly sink and swing naturally on clear water.

How to tie it

  1. Build the tapered leader

Join the 31" butt to the 16" mid with a blood knot. Add 13" of .015" with a blood knot. Add 11" of .013" with a blood knot. Add 9" of 0X with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 9" of 2X with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 9" of 4X with a triple surgeon's knot. Add 22" of 5X with a triple surgeon's knot.

The knots

  • Blood knot · 5 turns×3
    1. Overlap the two ends by about six inches.
    2. Wrap one tag end around the other line five times, then bring it back and pass it between the two lines where they cross.
    3. Wrap the other tag end five times the opposite way and pass it back through the same opening from the other side.
    4. Wet the knot and pull the two standing lines steadily until the wraps seat. Trim both tags close.
The blood knot, step by step
  • Triple surgeon's knot · 3 turns×4
    1. Lay the new line alongside the end of the leader so they overlap about six inches, the ends pointing opposite ways.
    2. Holding the two lines as one, tie an overhand knot, passing the whole new piece through the loop.
    3. Pass the same ends through the loop twice more, three times in all.
    4. Wet it and pull all four ends evenly to seat the knot. Trim the tags.
The triple surgeon's knot, step by step
  • Improved clinch knot · 5 turns×1
    1. Pass the tippet through the hook eye and pull about five inches through.
    2. Wrap the tag around the standing line five to seven times.
    3. Pass the tag through the small loop just above the eye, then back through the large loop you just made.
    4. Wet it and pull the standing line so the wraps snug down against the eye. Trim the tag.

When and how to fish it

Cast across or slightly down and across, mend once so the fly can sink, then let it swing on a tight line through runs and tailouts. Hang the fly at the end of the swing and add a few short, slow strips or a gentle lift. Let a fish take on the swing and hook itself rather than striking hard.

If the 5X tip lands in a pile, shorten it by a few inches. The fly will turn over and start fishing the moment it lands.

Common questions

  • Why so long for wet flies?

The 10-foot length and 22" fine tip keep the fly line away from the fish and let the fly sink and swing without being pulled by the line.

  • Will 5X hold a fish on the swing?

Yes, if the take is allowed to come tight on its own. A sharp lift against a fish on a tight swing is what breaks 5X.

  • How can the fly fish deeper?

Mend upstream to give it more time to sink, and slow the swing. A heavier wet pattern helps in faster water.

  • What rods does it suit?

Light 3-5 wt rods with floating lines. The .019" butt matches the tips of those lines.

  • A 12-foot leader for fishing soft-hackled spiders upstream on freestone rivers. A 90 inch mono taper steps down from a .017" butt to 5X at .006", then 54 inches of 6X tippet finishes it. The long, fine tip lets the spider land softly and drift naturally just under the surface, where trout take emerging insects.

  • A wet fly team leader for swinging three flies at once. It starts with 72" of tapered leader cut back to 3X, then 4X Maxima Chameleon in 6", 18" and 24" sections joined with triple surgeon's knots. Two 4" tags off those knots hold the droppers, and the point fly ties to the end. The team covers three depths on every swing.

  • Gary Borger's 7.5-foot leader for flies you move, finished in 3X: 51" of .020" butt, 13" of .013", and 26" of 3X (.008") tippet. The short, stout design keeps the line straight to the fly, so stripped and swung wet flies and nymphs stay under control and takes are felt. It casts well on 4-7 wt rods.
