Conditions

Gin-clear visibility and bluebird skies have trout highly selective, but an aggressive midday feed window from 11 AM to 3 PM offers solid opportunity. As of October 19, flows were running 90 CFS with water temperature holding at 48°F, ideal for fall fly fishing. Target slower, sun-warmed flats with small Blue-Winged Olive imitations in sizes 20-22, backed up by midge and tan caddis patterns. Use 6X or 7X fluorocarbon with a long leader, position well downstream, and cast upstream to avoid drag on these glassy flats.

Techniques

  • Work weed edges with subsurface nymphs during afternoon lull (3 PM - 5 PM) as light angles drop and fish reposition
  • Target rising fish on slow flats with dry flies and emergers in the film during 11 AM - 3 PM prime BWO hatch window
  • Midge nymphing in deeper channel sections before sun fully warms flats; fish active but tight to structure
