Hatch Status

Midges hatch throughout the year in Light Green and Red (Blood) varieties, sizes 20/22, in larva, pupa and adult stages.

Conditions

Silver Creek is running clear and stable near 105 cfs with water temperature at 62°F as of July 29. The upper Preserve section offers lighter currents and easier wading, while lower sections slow into deep pools best approached by float tube or from the bank. Glass-like surface conditions and dense aquatic vegetation demand drag-free drifts and sight-fishing; blind casting will spook these leader-shy trout. Blue-winged Olives lead the hatch, with scuds available year-round and Spotted Sedge Caddis, Little Yellow Stoneflies, and terrestrials (grasshoppers, ants, beetles) active through summer.

Techniques

  • Sight fish around vegetation and use correct weight on fly to avoid hanging up.
  • Fish tandem Midge rig under small strike indicator with midge larva as bottom fly and midge pupa as top fly.
  • Fish streamers during very low light conditions: early mornings, late afternoons, and heavily overcast skies.
  • Fish adult midge only when you observe trout feeding on the surface.
  • Scuds are available year-round and trout eat them year-round; use as productive fly imitations.
  • Find and stalk individual trout rather than blind casting to avoid spooking trout.
  • Carpenter ants (black and brown, sizes 16/18) and Sandwich hoppers (various colors, sizes 4-12) are terrestrial imitations that work throughout summer and early fall.

Access

Upper Preserve section accessible by wading. Lower sections best fished by float tube or from the bank due to depth and vegetation.

Safety

Heavy angling pressure and leader-shy trout require stealth and careful presentation. Dense vegetation and complex currents demand attention to footing and drift control.
