Hatch Status

A typical day will bring midges in the morning through early afternoon, followed by BWOs later in the day.

Conditions

Crystal-clear water and cold conditions make the Owyhee a sight-fishing playground right now. As of September 1, flows were running around 116 cfs with stable conditions. Morning midges in sizes #20-22 give way to Blue-Winged Olives around 2 p.m., and fish are feeding consistently on whatever comes down. Late afternoon and evening trips tend to be less crowded and reward you with rising fish in the riffles.

Gauges

Techniques

  • Sight-fishing for larger fish holding in the riffles during the afternoon has been great.
  • Having an assortment of small Zebra Midge patterns in sizes #20–22, with variations of cream, red, and black, has been producing well.
