Hatch Status

Fall BWOs #18-22

Conditions

Excellent hatches and stellar fishing across the board on the Coeur d'Alene right now. Fish are getting picky as water cools, so target slower, deeper water: pools, tailouts, and deep ripbank areas. Work mahogany duns #14-16, fall BWOs #18-22, and October caddis #6-10. Watch rising patterns closely: a nose poke with bubbles suggests a dun off the surface, while a dimple with a tail flick signals an emerger.

Gauges

Techniques

  • As water cools, fish hold in deeper slow moving water: deeper pools, tailouts, and deep riprap banks
  • Use longer and lighter leaders like Rio suppleflex 12ft 5x/6x when throwing small dries at picky fish
  • Pay attention to how fish are rising: nose up with bubbles indicates dun off top; dimple with tail flick indicates emerger
  • Smaller streamers in tan, brown, and olive are producing; cover water to find aggressive fish
  • Jakes hatchbacks and thorax duns imitate emergers well
  • Kris Keller's Ms. Tickle cripple and Bob Quigly's cripple emerger are great cripple patterns
