Hatch Status

Tricos mixed with Baetis hatching as day warms up

Conditions

The Big Lost runs low this time of year, and conditions vary sharply between the upper reaches and the lower section below Mackay. Upstream, very low water demands stealth and rewards patient midday and late-afternoon fishing. Below Mackay, flows are more manageable at 304 cfs, though still pushy enough to require wading care. Early morning and late afternoon will see the most consistent insect activity; midday hatches tend to quiet. Expect Tricos mixed with Baetis as temperatures rise through the morning, giant crane flies throughout the day, and sporadic small caddis. Cool headwater temperatures may trigger Hecuba hatches in the upper reaches. Clear skies and stable pressure through the outlook period favor consistent, fishable conditions.
