Lake Character
Treeless high-desert reservoir at about 5,300 feet, windy, with stocked rainbows plus incidental perch and bass.
Skill Level
Beginner to intermediate, but plan for cold mornings and wind that can keep float tubes off the water.
Best Techniques
Dark chironomids under an indicator, black or olive balanced leeches, damsel nymphs later in spring.
Boat Access
Basic ramp with gravel parking; motors are not restricted here, float tubes and boats work when the wind allows.
Big Rainbows on Tribal Water
Mountain View sits on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, the only one of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes' three reservoirs on the Idaho side. You fish it on a tribal permit, sold online, at Owyhee ACE Hardware and at Boise fly shops, and no state license is required. The lake is open year-round with a limit of 5 rainbow trout per day and 10 in possession, no size restriction, one pole unless you buy a two-pole permit. Its sister lakes, Sheep Creek and fly-only Lake Billy Shaw, are across the line in Nevada. The tribes stock rainbows from disease-free hatcheries and the fish grow fast, with 15 to 17 inch trout common and 20-plus inch fish a regular part of spring catches. Ice-out is usually late March and the first weeks after it are the best of the year. Eighteen powered campsites and dry camping sit by the water. Questions: Tribal Fish and Game, (208) 759-3246.
