Conditions

Lower flows have made wading and bank access easier on the South Fork. Fish are selective during the heat of the day and reluctant to take dries; your best fishing comes early morning or late evening. Expect PMDs during the day, with caddis and spinner falls firing at dusk. As of August 26, flows were running around 5,950 cfs at Lorenzo and stable, with partly cloudy skies and mild winds making for decent conditions overall.

Techniques

  • Fish are eating smaller emergers and cripples with patient, well-placed casts and drag-free drifts.
  • Streamers early in the morning or late in the evening—even into the night—are worth a shot.
  • Hopper-dropper or hopper-dropper-dropper has been good.
  • Savvy anglers are fishing the early morning and late evening hours.
