Hatch Status

Lots of feeding fish eating emergers, small size 16-18-20 Juju Baetis, Skinny Nelsons, and soft hackles match those smaller bugs

Conditions

Fish are podding in slower tailouts and glides, feeding selectively on small bugs. As of October 10, flows were 268 cfs at Cataldo, running much below normal and stable. Look for mahogany, blue-wing olive, and spotty October caddis activity. Consider smaller nymphs like Juju Baetis and Skinny Nelsons, soft hackles, and tungsten patterns to reach fish in tight lies.

Gauges

Techniques

  • Fish feed on emergers just under surface, 2 inches to six inches down, can hang off back of small caddis or tandem under small indicator
  • Large orange Stimulator or size 12-14 orange Chubby Chernobyl matches October caddis well
  • Prospecting with orange Chubby Chernobyl and 2-3-foot dropper, size 14-16 tungsten Perdigon or Pheasant Tail tungsten dropper gets eats when fish aren't showing
  • Streamer fishing has been killer with cooler fall temps, big fish on the hunt to bulk up for winter
  • Fish through run with smaller dries or nymphs, rest run, then come back through with smaller sculpin or streamer
