Community Guidelines

Barbless is built around useful fishing information and people who care about the water, the fish, and getting better at the craft.

These Community Guidelines apply to public and private community features on Barbless, including fishing reports, condition reports, reviews, comments, photos, profiles, provider listings, corrections, map contributions, and other user-generated content.

They are part of our Terms of Service.

1. Be Useful Without Being Abusive

Disagreement is allowed. Criticism is allowed. Strong opinions about fishing, access, regulations, conservation, guides, gear, or spot sharing are allowed.

Harassment is not.

Do not:

threaten violence or physical harm;
repeatedly target someone with degrading or intimidating messages;
stalk or coordinate harassment against another person;
encourage others to dogpile, threaten, or intimidate someone;
use another person's private information as a weapon; or
threaten a person, guide, business, or reviewer to force them to remove legitimate content.

Arguments about whether a fishing location should have been shared do not justify harassment.

2. Do Not Post Private Information

Do not publish, solicit, trade, or threaten to publish sensitive personal information without authorization.

Examples include:

home addresses;
private phone numbers or email addresses;
private real-time locations;
account credentials or authentication codes;
financial information;
government identification numbers;
private access codes, gate codes, or keys; and
other information that could reasonably create a safety, identity-theft, or financial risk.

Business contact information that a guide, outfitter, shop, or other provider intentionally makes public may generally be listed for legitimate informational purposes.

3. Be Who You Say You Are

Do not impersonate:

another user;
a guide or outfitter;
a business;
a government agency or official;
a conservation organization; or
Barbless staff or moderators.

Parody or satire is allowed when a reasonable person would understand that it is not the real person or organization.

Do not create fake identities or coordinated accounts to manipulate reviews, reports, ratings, votes, engagement, or community discussion.

4. No Spam or Platform Manipulation

Do not use Barbless primarily to flood, manipulate, or deceive the community.

Prohibited behavior includes:

repetitive unsolicited promotions;
bulk or automated posting that overwhelms normal use;
link spam;
fake engagement;
coordinated rating manipulation;
fake fishing reports intended to manipulate attention or behavior;
scams, phishing, or deceptive offers;
malicious redirects; and
using reporting tools to harass or silence other users.

Reasonable promotion by guides, shops, makers, or other fishing businesses may be allowed in features designed for that purpose.

Only post photos, text, video, maps, graphics, or other content that you created or have permission or legal authority to use.

Do not copy somebody else's fishing photography, article, map, paid report, video, or other copyrighted work and repost it as your own.

6. No Illegal Activity

Do not use Barbless to organize, encourage, or facilitate illegal activity.

For fishing and outdoor content, this includes knowingly promoting or coordinating:

poaching or unlawful take;
fishing closed waters or closed seasons;
unlawful methods or limits;
trespass;
theft or vandalism;
trafficking in illegally taken fish or wildlife;
intentional evasion of lawful enforcement; or
other conduct prohibited by applicable law.

Discussing laws, enforcement, historical violations, policy disagreements, or news about illegal activity is allowed when the purpose is informational, educational, journalistic, or otherwise legitimate.

7. Fishing Reports and Condition Reports

Fishing reports are most useful when they describe what you actually observed.

When posting a report:

distinguish firsthand observation from rumor or secondhand information when it matters;
do not knowingly fabricate catches, flows, closures, access conditions, or other material facts;
use dates and locations accurately enough that readers can understand the report;
do not intentionally mislabel old photographs as current conditions; and
correct material mistakes when you become aware of them and have the ability to do so.

Fishing changes fast. A report being wrong later does not mean the original poster violated these rules.

Users are responsible for checking current regulations, access, weather, flows, closures, and safety conditions before acting on a report.

Barbless allows legitimate discussion of rivers, lakes, reaches, access points, hatches, and fishing locations.

We do not treat the mere act of naming a public fishing location as harassment or misconduct.

However, do not use location sharing to:

expose a person's private home or real-time private location;
direct users onto private property without legal access;
encourage fishing in a legally closed area;
publish private gate codes or access credentials; or
intentionally create a safety risk.

9. Reviews of Guides, Outfitters, Shops, and Other Providers

Reviews should reflect real experiences and honest opinions.

Do not:

submit a review for an experience that did not happen;
use AI-generated or fabricated reviews presented as real customer experiences;
offer or accept compensation conditioned on a review being positive or negative;
hide a material relationship when it would affect how readers evaluate the review;
review your own business through a fake or undisclosed account;
coordinate fake positive or negative review campaigns; or
threaten a reviewer to suppress a legitimate negative review.

Employees, owners, family members, sponsored users, or others with a material relationship to a reviewed business should clearly disclose that relationship when posting a review or endorsement.

A negative review does not violate these Guidelines merely because the business disputes it.

10. Guide and Provider Listings

If you claim or manage a guide, outfitter, shop, shuttle, lodging, or other provider listing:

provide accurate identifying and contact information;
do not falsely claim licenses, permits, certifications, insurance, affiliations, or service areas;
do not claim another business's listing without authorization;
keep material business information reasonably current; and
comply with applicable laws governing the service you provide.

Barbless may request verification before allowing a person to claim or control a provider listing.

11. Photos, Fish Handling, and Graphic Content

Fishing and hunting-adjacent outdoor content may naturally include fish, hooks, blood, harvest, or animal handling.

That content is generally allowed when relevant to legitimate fishing, education, conservation, science, or reporting.

We may remove or limit content that depicts gratuitous cruelty, intentional abuse of wildlife, or illegal treatment of fish or animals.

12. Commercial Content and Conflicts

Guides, outfitters, shops, manufacturers, makers, sponsors, and other businesses are welcome to participate where the product permits it.

Commercial relationships should not be disguised as independent community opinion.

If money, free products, free trips, employment, ownership, sponsorship, affiliate commissions, or another material benefit would reasonably affect how readers evaluate a recommendation, disclose it clearly.

13. Safety and Misinformation

People make mistakes, and fishing information changes quickly. Barbless does not remove ordinary disagreements or good-faith errors merely because another user claims they are wrong.

We may remove, label, or limit content where there is strong reason to believe it creates a material and foreseeable risk, including false information about:

emergency closures;
dangerous releases or water conditions;
legal access where trespass risk is substantial;
fraudulent guide or business credentials; or
other matters where a false claim could predictably cause serious harm.

14. Moderation

Barbless may moderate content and accounts to enforce these Guidelines and our Terms.

Depending on the circumstances, we may:

leave content up;
add context or a warning;
reduce visibility;
remove content;
restrict a feature;
remove provider verification or claiming privileges;
temporarily suspend an account; or
terminate an account.

We may consider severity, intent, context, frequency, prior violations, risk of harm, and whether the user corrected the issue.

We are not required to moderate every piece of content before it appears, and failure to remove one item does not mean similar content is permitted.

15. Reporting Content

For an immediate threat to life or physical safety, contact local emergency services or law enforcement. Do not rely on Barbless as an emergency-response service.
