Laura Bechdel grew up immersed in river culture, with her parents founding Canyons River Company in 1985 when she was two years old. She worked as a full-time guide with Canyons for 18 years, gaining experience on the Middle Fork and Main Salmon rivers as well as seasonal trips to Grand Canyon and Costa Rica before transitioning to focus on family and other professional pursuits. Today, while her time on the water is primarily spent with her husband Neal and their children Lucas and Ruby—continuing a three-generation family tradition of river enthusiasts—she remains connected to Canyons and regularly returns to guide. Beyond the rivers, Laura serves as Director of Studies and Faculty at Alzar School, a semester-based high school in Idaho and Chile that develops leadership through outdoor adventure and cultural immersion, and she also leads the McCall Library Foundation as President. In her home community of McCall, Idaho, Laura enjoys reading, word games, morel hunting, skate skiing, and spending time with her family.
