Father and Son's Fly Angling and Business Ventures - Kelcey, Hunter and Mason Derrick

Kelcey, Hunter and Mason Derrick represent two generations of fly fishermen, and make up three fifths of the local fly tying cooperative Meat Market Flies. The five-member co-op is a part of a growing movement to support locally made items, and also includes Jason Langstaff from Fish First! Fly Shop and Lukas Ferrenburg as partners. The business started as a way for the three Derricks to save up enough money to be able to afford a drift boat. While the business has just launched, they have already gotten their first major order from a guide who plans to use the flies on a destination trip to Alaska. The flies are primarily for bass, trout and steelhead fishing, but they also do pike and musky flies. Hear about the family’s favorite places to fish, why they choose to only sell streamers, and how they get everyone in their family involved in fly fishing, even their three year old brother. Stay tuned to hear some tips from Mason and Hunter on how to get kids like themselves involved in the sport, in particular how they think Cast Hope can help. Mason talks about his participation in the Heritage Trout Challenge and how he has already crushed it. Kelcey also weighs in on how he got all of his kids to fall in love with the outdoors. Later, Hunter gives some tips for anyone who is hoping to score in the brand ambassador world. To listen to The Nature Conservancy Episode check out episode #17! Fish First! Fly Shop in Chico, California - Manager and Guide Mac Noble

Listen in as Chad meets with Mac Noble from Fish First! Fly Shop in Chico, CA. Mac had an interesting introduction to fly fishing. His roommate from college showed him fly fishing in Chico, and he was instantly “hooked”. After finishing at Cal Poly, he took a drive to see where he wanted to live - checked out Oregon, Washington and Idaho before settling in Chico. After all, the shad were running, Deer Creek had steelhead, and he generally fell in love with the area’s amazing fishing. 25 years later, Mac is still loving it in Chico. In addition to working at Fish First, he does guiding in the Sacramento, Feather, Yuba, Klamath and Coastal rivers. Mac debates competing in a spey casting competition in San Francisco. He watched it last year and thought it was amazing. Mac talks about all of the great places to learn to Fly Fish in the Northern California area. Top of the list was One Mile Sycamore Pool in Chico, which is a great place to practice casting in the shallow end. Mac also  mentions the best reasons to go fly fishing in the Feather, Yuba and Sacramento Rivers. Nerd out with Mac as he talks about his favorite types of flies for the different waterways he frequents. The Fish First! Fly Shop has two locations. Chico is satellite for Albany (next to Berkeley) shop. The Albany shop has been around for 20 years, Chico for 16 years. For more information on Fish First!
