A small creek with a North Arm of little islands and boulders, and pocket water and pools at a road culvert.
Rice Creek is a small tributary in the North Fork Feather drainage above Lake Almanor. Two spots reach it, one on its North Arm and one at a road culvert. Upper Rice Creek, on the North Arm, is 2.0 mi past the Loop Rd sign. In 1990 any vehicle could get there, small trailers included. It is a small stream split around little islands, with wood and boulders for cover, and you can walk it in either direction. The culvert crossing is 0.4 mi past the sign for Feather River Meadows. In 1990 the road there was tight for big RVs and trailers, and parking was on the east side of the culvert. Downstream of the culvert the creek tumbles through pocket water, and the way down to it is steep. Upstream the gradient eases into pools and small falls. On the North Arm, wading is the best way to fish it, though you can work it from the bank. At the culvert, the gentler water upstream is the easier place to start. Regulations change and differ by section, so check the current California regulations before you go.
